Not in the sense of being re-signed, but being brought back in from the cold after being frozen out for a long spell.

Listening to Adkins talk about the captaincy, it sounds like Neill Collins is a genuine contender for it. This would be a bit of a remarkable turnaround for him. To a certain extent it still is even if he's just back to being an active member of the squad.

Usually when this happens, a player is sold at the earliest opportunity - they don't normally get the chance to redeem themselves afresh. I'm struggling to think of any other examples of this – can anyone think of any?

Closest one I can think of would be Paul Shaw.

Neil Warnock had Shaun Murphy at Notts County in the early 90s. When Warnock came to the Lane I think some of his first words to Murphy were something like "I don't rate you". But Murphy managed to change his opinion completely and became a trusted first choice.

He also forced his way back into the side later on in his united career after a spell at Palace on loan.

Tongey didn't play much in the first half of the promotion season but forced his way back in during the second.

Although he dropped him for the play off final... Big mistake

I thought there were family issues which meant he wasn't available for selection. He didn't play in the semis either.

Maybe. Can't remember. He was sat in the stand near to where I was.

Didn't Windass get dropped also?

Murphy didn't play in the Semi's because his wife was ill. After the season finished he moved back to Austrailia with his family. Him and Page were solid that season.

Great example. He was properly out of favour too as I recall because he'd refused a new contract and Warnock froze him out in response.

Same happened with Colin Franks who didnt enjoy it at Watford when Furphy was the manager. He came to us in Summer 1973 but Furphy became our manager in December 1973 and Franks wasnt happy!

I do like to wangle in a dig where ever possible with Colin but I think with Murphy for the Play-off final it was due to personal reasons with his wife being ill, as a few have already said.

A fully fit and available Murphy, plus Colin selecting McCall and Windass (experience straight down the spine) and we'd have won that one. Still can't believe he selected Rankine over McCall, that just gave Ince for Wolves the license to dominate midfield (and influence the referee).

As for Collins, would definitely be my number one choice as captain from the current squad. If he does get back in the team, he defo needs a big dominant centre half alongside. Be nice to see him pick up the pot for winning the division in May and saying something along the lines of "up yours Cloughy"

Rankine over McCall was nuts, but I will always defend the non-selection of Windass, on the basis of his appalling performance in the second leg if the semi final. His substitution was one of the things that changed the game.

I remember Marcus Williams being David Weir's surprise first choice at left back having seemingly been on his way out by the end of the previous season..

He played in almost all of the pre-season matches and the first few of the regular season.

I think it took Weir about four matches to realise what many had suspected all along and then he tried to replace him the likes of McGinty.

I hope a similar situation doesn't occur with Collins.

Players are usually given a second chance when you are struggling to fill / resolve that certain position in question .
