Plan B

We did everything but score and had 75% possession. It’s daft to say but we did everything but score

When a team parks the bus like that there’s not much you can do.

We had chances, we passed the ball beautifully and we had some shots from distance

Plan B would be to back off and catch them on the counter, but they didn’t even want to come out!
Sorry Swiss, but there is something you can do. Every side they’ve played in the division thus far has scored against them - we couldn’t. We will have to get used to sides parking the bus the longer we’re up the top end and if we can’t win those games we’ll not be at the top for long.

They haven’t played that defensively in any other game. And somehow that awful keeper had a blinder!

I agree - we can do more, score the penalty. Do that and it would’ve been a very different game as their Plan A would’ve been fooked

I'm not sure a plan b is necessary when we absolutely dominated and missed a penalty.

I've just re-checked the result, it finished 0-0, and we won 1 point. If we want 3 points, I think we need a plan B, unless the FA start awarding points for the prettiness of approach play. :)

My old man’s not from these shores, but is a massive football fan and (in my opinion) knows his stuff. He catches the odd Sheff Utd game on Sky
as he obviously wants to share my passion.

Anyway, I was surprised by his view of us last night which was actually pretty negative. In his opinion, Wednesday clearly came for the draw and had us half figured out. So long as they flooded their own box with numbers, odds were they’d defend our crosses. He was visibly frustrated and getting impatient with our inability to change things up.

Wednesday were terrible. Even at our best, I’ve not seen us dominate a side like that for 90 minutes. But we need players to start driving through the middle more. Lampard used to be a master at playing a pass and then making runs beyond. We need to start beating men. Taking shots. We need an option for a more direct route, a striker who plays on the shoulder. At the moment we’re too predictable and easy to defend against. Our one touch stuff is class at times, McGoldrick and Duffy were causing chaos in the opening 30. When they fade (which is inevitable given their age / fitness records) all we have is these overloads and poorly delivered crosses.

That's hindsight though isn't it. If we are absolutely dominating a game and missing penalties I would expect the goal to come and be loathed to change it.

In no other game that they’ve played this season have they been as defensive as they were yesterday. If they had there would’ve been a few other teams who hadn’t scored against them.

It’s easy to say that we should be better at breaking teams down and that we need to get used to teams ‘parking the bus’ but I’ve never seen one game of football in this division where a team have been as defensive as Wednesday were yesterday. We’ve seen teams come and defend but yesterday was on a completely different level. It was like they were a conference team hoping to earn a replay against a Premiership team.

There seems to be some underlying assumption on this thread that if we’d have had a big lump up top yesterday we’d have gone on to win the game. I don’t think we’d have faired any better personally. The biggest issue yesterday was not getting the ball into the box quickly enough.

I haven’t got a clue how to break down a team that shows no ambition whatsoever, with championship players. We couldn’t draw them on to counter-attack and get behind them, we couldn’t play through them or get round them. It’s rare to see a championship club shut up shop against another club in the same league, it’s what you’d expect Cardiff to do against City.

I’m not sure any championship club could break them down when they play like that. If I was a pig, I’d be wondering why they don’t put that much effort into other games. And why they didn’t stick that giant freak up front for the last ten to try and nick it.

That for me is our main problem, just watching the game back now and I must have said "cross it" about 15 times and then we take an extra touch/touches
