Phipps and co

With the possibility of Prince Abdullah Arzitgooin #gamechanger taking sole cotrol of the club, how realistic do you think it is that he would place Jim Phipps back in the boardroom?

For me it would be a complete backward step. I thought the guy was friendly, warm and open....... but not a football man in the slightest. I would rather have executives that were business savvy and not even on twitter than a PR man who gagues success by likes and retweets.

I know JP has his fans and friends on here and I am sorry if I cause offence. He just isn't for me. It just takes me back to the era of Baxter, Brayford, Clough......... We have moved on. We are better.

I am worried.

Don't knock the big man.....standing 5th in the prediction league. Respect

In fairness to Clough most people were ecstatic when he brought Brayford, a very small minority dissented at the time.

I was one of that very small minority and one of the very few who thought Jim Phipps was an absolute joke from day one.

I still do.

Phipps was unlucky in that Clough went crackers in his second season. He was the football man and Phipps delegated to him as he should.

The amount Clough spent on JB suggested he thought we had endless cash when we didn’t. If that was indicative of Phipps ceding too much power, and not having enough oversight then that was his error.

I hope the club is better structured now.

It was a shambles mate. I have heard directly from someone who was working at the academy that the club was being run like a rudderless ship. Wilder said as much when he first arrived in one of his first interviews.

For me it is no coincidence that as soon as all of the merry men in the boardroom were removed or left, success followed - in the first season trying to get up, we did. We absolutely pissed the league.

I don't want to attack Jim unnecessarily, but I remember that whilst him and Seli etc were at the club we failed repeatedly. What were the objectives presented to the board? What were they being measured on? What was expected of them? If it was promotion, they failed, if it was income generation, they failed..... If it was tweeting needy fans, they succeeded.

Fan liaison is important, I agree. However great people think Jim was, I have never felt so disconnected from the club as I did when the players and Adkins did their walk of shame on the last day of the season - That was the culmination of where the board had taken us.

The first thing Wilder had to do was get shut of 17 players. Players that had been bought by Clough and Adkins, yes..... but Phipps and co should have been managing this. They were the budget holders after all

Like I say, I pray we don't go back to the circus that once was. Interesting times ahead.

.

You dont need all football men on the Board, and you could say now he does have some experience of the task :)

I think it's better when you say Jim Phipps, and think, Gulf War Veteran

I think it's better when you say Jim Phipps, and think, Was at the helm at one of the worst points in our club's history. Great on twitter though.

No thanks , showed his true colours when he completely chucked Clough under the bus after being as responsible if not more so in the transfer of Brayford. When it all went tits though he couldn’t distance himself quick enough.

Jim Phipps was a great ambassador for the club and would help fans when he could and would often go the extra mile to do so, I have personal experience of him doing that, he was also instrumental in the clubs tribute to one of if not its greatest fan when he passed away

JimPhipps if you're coming back, can you bring me some Root Beer over please? It's not easy to get here :)
Isn't it just Dandelion and Burdock? (My first attempt at typing that came out Butdick, glad I checked it before I posted.)

I agree that he was great at stuff like that and I take nothing away from how important it is.

He was shite at the actual job though, which is my point

"I have followed Sheffield United since the 1970s and as I write I am a season ticket holder and to put some context in to this post my wife is Saudi and I worked in Saudi Arabia from 2010-2016.

During this time I followed two football clubs in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, Al Hilal and Al Nassr. Two clubs that the Prince was involved in. I spoke to some of the fans about the Prince and Sheffield United and they informed me that at their respective clubs he sold on most of the best players and made a handsome profit from the clubs and left. The royals have a habit of owning clubs in Saudi Arabia which have been badly managed.

I have also read local media reports in my home city of Sheffield that the Prince has spoken of himself as a self made millionaire. My knowledge of the House of Saud is that all Prince's are not born poor but have vast's amounts of wealth given to them procured from the sale of oil. So he's not been entirely truthful. Yes, he's invested his wealth but he certainly is not self-made and being royal, connections in high places helps.

Also the Prince has hardly spent anytime watching Sheffield United and as not much idea about the history and culture of the club and what the club means to ordinary fans like myself. He's hardly attended any meetings at the club.

The Prince also, as we know, became the Saudi Youth Sports Minister. However, during that time he spent most of his time in his Los Angeles mansion. So no commitment there then!

I for one have my reservations and have come across to many consultants in Saudi Arabia like Jim Phipps who are only there for the wealth that they themselves can accumulate at the expense of the local population.

I might be wrong but if you follow the news the House of Saud is at war with itself and if we are not careful, my club Sheffield United in some indirect way, may become part of the spoils of that fall-out."

Pinch of salt article, pig fan perhaps, but a couple of interesting points

This bloke maybe...

What was his actual job ?
Do we know what influence he had over Clough etc ?
Was he just the representative of the Prince and did as he was instructed ?

I would love to know.

1. What his KPIs were
2. What his salary and expenses were
3. Where the 'think Liverpool' money is
4. Does the Prince still use the cutlery set Kev presented him

Which job was that then? Acting co-owner, Acting chairman, Board Director, Advisor to the Prince? What was he actually shite at and what is your evidence to support this?

So why say he was shite at his job when you have no odea what his job was
His salary and expenses had nothing to do with SUFC he was paid directly by the Prince so really have nothing to do with you

Interesting how Phipps and the rest of the Princes men are getting stick from the same people who back McCabe. Am I missing somerhing, was McCabe absent through our 6 years in division one ?

Old kev can get ready too. Chairman of our longest ever absence from the top flight

I am not a fan

Surely he was there to guide and lead the club to promotion. That was our sole aim.

Look at the mess we were in. Jim only played a small part in that, but he played a part.

Then turned on Clough like a snidey bastard..... wrong un

The fact that nobody actually knows what he did speaks for itself.

That bloke is beginning to get on my tits; is he a Blade? Did he hear any of this or is his name a pseudonym for a BS merchant trying to cause trouble?
Yeah, it happened. Not hundreds IMO, just a smallish group. Quite a few Blades jeered and booed them so they didn't do it again.

I don't remember Jim Phipps picking McEveley and Alcock as a centre back pairing in our most important play off game for years. The team didn't get promoted because of Nigel Clough. Clough had considerably more backing than a lot of managers at the Lane
that season and still failed to deliver. As Jim only played a small part in this who were the others responsible?

It's not the new dancin' troupe Prince's got lined up for pre-match and half-time entertainment...
