Phillips Tackle

Phillips was expecting a 50/50 and went in hard. If it was a 50/50, their feet collide
I think their man bottled the challenge which meant there was a follow through.

Ultimately though, Phillips planted his studs into his knee, it doesn't matter if Ingelsson bottled it or not, studs to the knee is a red all day long

Modern day red but for anyone who's played the game, it will feel harsh to most as it's simply bad luck that the momentum catches him on the follow through.

Not that long ago it wouldn't have even been a foul.

I'm all for punishing certain challenges that endangers an opponent, deliberately high, over the ball, out of control etc but this type always feels a little harsh as it's often unavoidable and the only way to guarantee it doesn't happen, is by not challenging properly.

Watching at the time it was just a regulation midfield tackle, Phillips wins the ball. I was looking upfield with no thought of anything other than the game continuing.

Then there's all this fuss, and a red card.

And guess what...Ingelsson - who'd been shithousing all game - after an extended period of dramatic hobbling, grimacing, and limping, makes a miraculous recovery and finishes the game fit as a fiddle.

Who's their physio? Jesus?

Which is exactly what the rest of the midfield did after this "incident". There was at least one occasion where we let them walk through us because we were too afraid to make a challenge.

For me, these are the ones where you say, alright, no malice, but that's out of control and that's how players get badly hurt. At that level you just have to be more controlled. He's had plenty of space to win the ball cleanly and then followed through way more than he needed to.

The one I can think of from earlier in the season was when (I think) Ben Mee went sliding through and won the ball as cleanly as you've ever seen and then the ref gave a free kick because it's too hard. Those ones wind me up no end.

I know there's always disagreement with how people view these, but I think as soon as hit someone the way Phillips did that's the point where cards are a genuine player safety thing. And no one's disputing that he hit him high and hit him hard.

What are we supposed to be looking at here?

What does a screenshot taken before the incident prove?
The photo shows Phillips totally in control as he strikes the ball and Ingelsson coming in late.

Phillips is not looking at him - he’s looking at the ball - which he gets to. You can’t predict the future about where a leg will be.

If you jump for a header and somebody slides in underneath you and you land on their leg is it a red?

This contact is actually a late tackle by Ingelsson, as he smashes into Phillips after Phillips has cleared the ball.

UTB & FTP!

Philips got sent off for smashing his studs into the side of Ingelsson's knee.

This is a screenshot of Phillips kicking the ball before that happened.

Useless.

I think it’s unfortunate, rather than harsh.

I think it’s a player who hasn’t played much football expecting Ingelsson steaming in on him trying to clear the ball over the half way line.

Every kick takes some back lift and produces a follow through.

I think he’s made a genuine attempt to clear the back well away from our area but unfortunately follows through right on the knee of the opposition player (unintentionally)

Can’t really argue the card because of the contact but the Wednesday player also makes a massive meal of it

That's what led to their goal. We were very soft letting Otegbayo dance though. Peck, Bamford and Brooks just stood watching.

Another example would be Burrows’ goal yesterday. In order to get the power behind the shot, he follows through and his leg ends up being above knee height. Now imagine a defender comes in late and gets caught, should Burrows be sent off and the goal not stand?

The sending off was ridiculous, Phillips is clearing the ball, he’s booting it up field. How can he control the follow through whilst generating the power needed?

I've said the exact same.

Every time someone has a shot against us, just run into his follow through and he'll be sent off.

100% not a red. In reality, not even a foul.

I remember Kalvin did something similar to George Baldock right in front of the away end at Elland Road in 2017. He was lucky to get away with it that day.

It's one of those where when it's against you you're certainly calling for a red, but it can go either way. It's a clearance at the end of the day and I don't know what he's meant to do? Just not go for a ball that's there to be won?

I think a player without the injury record that Phillips has doesn't follow through like that. He won the ball but saw the pig coming in maybe over the top and/or slightly late. In that scenario Phillips gets hammered on his shin/ankle. In order to mitigate this Phillips follows through higher on the other players leg.

It just shows that his mentality isn't quite right yet and he's still carrying mental scars of his previous injuries. Maybe the same with Blaster atm. I'm not knocking them for this btw, it's completely understandable. But to get back to any sort of level he (and Blaster was too) before injuries requires the mental scars to heal too.

Right you're getting on my tatas with this now.

This is the original clearance. Natural motion. Connects with Ingelsson above the knee. Bit clumsy, foul but not a red.

This is Phillips clearly following through. It's not the natural upswing of a leg during a clearance, it's a downwards push into the side of his knee. That's a red.

United have the right to appeal if they think the filmed evidence shows it was an obvious error by the Ref.

Given how close the Ref was to the Incident and his clear view of it, I'd be very surprised if we appealed it.

Back in the Stone Age, when I played, it wouldn't even have been a foul never mind yellow or red card.

But that was then, these days if your challenge is deemed dangerous or reckless .....

So you think in the milliseconds between those two clips, he's decided he's going to push down into his leg?

Do you expect him to keep his leg in the air? How long for? When is he allowed to bring it back down again?

It's a red, I just disagree with your assessment.
