Just saying...it seems inconsistent to me that if you even slightly touch a keeper you get penalised for interference and yet last night it was acceptable for their keeper to win the ball with a flying, studs-up two-footed challenge that would be a red card anywhere else on the pitch...

you mean like the one that Moore got for basically the same thing??

I thought it was a good shout for the foul on Baldock(?) having seen the replay. A premiership referee last night?

At first I thought it was a reckless challenge and could’ve easily been a pen, having seen it back I think the Ref got it right and it was a great bit of goalkeeping, although Evans dilly dallying with the ball gave him the chance to get near it.

It was Evans and that was a penalty all day long. Nowhere near the ball and takes the man out.

The keeper one is less obvious but can see your point as it was a two-footed challenge. It was not however like the Moore one which was a very bad high challenge reminiscent of Harald Schumacher!

The Evans one was 82 minutes, just outside the box and was a 100%, nailed on, not a scintilla of doubt free kick. The worst part is that the linesman was about ten yards away and clearly thought differently.

Evans was running at pace, put his foot on the ball to do a Cruyff turn, Bamba couldn't stop and just took Evans out, never got a touch on the ball. The commentator said he helped Evans down....

To make it worse, immediately afterwards, Baldock bodychecked a Cardiff player, not in the same league as Bamba's clattering and he couldn't get his flag up quick enough.

When we protested to the ref, Oliver pointed to his linesman as much as to say he was closer and saw nothing wrong. It was so blatant that we could see it from the BLUT, but two officials couldn't. I know they can't get everything right, but that was a shocker.

Just realised, I'm talking about a different Evans one :-)

The one by Bamba was a clear foul. The officials thought it was in the area and bottled it.

The keeper one was dangerous play and could easily have been a sending off. It's just that officials have a different set of their own rules for keepers and for penalties.

Other than the foul on Evans, and not booking their player for pulling (baldock?) back early in the game I thought the ref did pretty well.
There were a few challenges where a more fussy ref would have lost it. One particular one stood out to me, Fleck, I think, on their Viking no 17? Looked similar to his sending off v Bristol.
The Cardiff player deserves a lot of credit for getting straight back up.

I was told by two Premiership officials, that referees had been told, that whilst it maybe a foul in the box, they should consider if a penalty would be the correct decision, within the context of that specific game?

Whatever that means? It’s no wonder there’s no consistency and such bizarre decisions are seen week in week out.

Here we are naively thinking if it’s a foul in the box, it’s a penalty

Like 'if it's a Prem.top 6 club give it' ? If it's a club that boosts the Premier League Brand then give it? If it's a team we want to get promotion to the Prem then give it?

Just like that first pen at the Emirates over the weekend against Stoke, it would not have been given at the other end of the pitch. That's 'the context' alright. Not even the second pen would have been given at the other end.

Exactly I was quite aghast when they said it. I love football and it’s pretty much been my life, either playing or watching.
But if that’s true we might as well forget it, as it’s basically the beginning of the end for professional Football as a spectator sport.

I wasn't at the game last night and only got to see highlights on channel 5 after being at work. In my view the ref bottled a couple of big decisions.
The kick by the goalie at the end that led to their goal was stupid!!. He rolls the ball a few yards forward and the ref motions for him to take it back. He basically looks at the ref and says fuck you. The standard of refereeing has been poor and is getting worse!. IMHO. Utb

The Ref made him take it back 10 yards(ish) if it’s the one I’m thinking of?

Yeah you’re right he told him to go back and then go back further. Thought ref was ok last night. The Evans free kick was the linos responsibility to call. Only call that wound me up was when Baldock over ran it in first half and slid in for the challange winning the ball fairly and safely but was penalised, but even then I can Understand why he gave a free kick

The Bamba/Evans incident is only debatable as to whether it’s in or out of the box. What’s not arguable is the fact it was a fucking foul. The linesman is in cuckoo land, hears a load of shouting, snaps out of it and gives Cardiff a free kick for a lesser foul. Appalling decision. If the foul on Evans was made on halfway its a free kick. The ref has clearly given benefit of the doubt to the defender based on the fact he gives them a free-kick straight away.
