I've seen this mentioned a lot over the last couple of weeks.

Some people seem to assume that all players are bought over a 3-year period.

The way a buying club pays for a player depends on the selling club. If the selling club are desperate for money, they aren't likely to let you pay for a player in instalments.

What if we borrowed the money from a lender and paid them over three years - selling club still get their money straight away...is that the sort of thing that's done?

Every negotiation is different but when you're dealing with sums in the millions you also have the ability to go straight to a bank and say "We're owed £12m by a football club and we'd like to borrow against it" (if I'm remembering right then we did this with the Brooks sale). The whole world runs on debt.

If they are hard up for cash they are more likely to allow negotiation, as it's a case of 'get some money now and some in future or no money at all'. I would have a fairly educated guess that the vast majority of deals now are paid in instalments.

I think we did for last season's TV money as well didn't we so we could spend in advance last summer? Aussie loan I think
