Paul Coutts - I got it wrong

I seem to remember reading early in the season a newspaper interview with him. Turns out, he'd just settled with his wife in Sheffield and recently had a baby. Maybe a bit of settling down off the field, and also getting a new element to his life, has refocused him and contributed to what we're seeing now.

The injury he suffered was horrific, and Clough shouldn't have signed him when he was still at an early stage of coming back from it. He is now looking like the player everybody expected him to become earlier in his career, and the last couple of seasons are in no way his fault.

Precisely Nick. This season, for the first time in his Blades career, Couttsy is playing free of injury and pain. He's had a full pre-season and looks fitter, leaner and sharper. Add that to a talent way above par for League One and you have a midfielder who is an absolute delight to watch. And, even better, he's not the only one in this exciting, attractive, entertaining and effective footballing team.

Thank Pele. Thank Tufty.

I can't believe all this talk of his 2 crap years we had before this season.

Firstly, it was only 1 and a half seasons we had him before this season.

His first half season we signed him not long after he had recovered from a serious injury which kept him out for the best part of a year. Yes, he wasn't very good but he also clearly wasn't fit and was struggling mentally. He did gradually improve slightly though and by the end of the season was playing OK.

Last season he wasn't that bad at all IMO. He was a victim of Adkins chopping and changing the side all the time, but I would say was one of the better over all performers of last season in a truly woeful side.

How about just enjoying and appreciating having such a classy footballer in our team. Yes he's not perfect, that's why he's playing in league 1 with us. However, I'm fairly confident that if we win promotion this season he would look even better in the championship.

I have accrued a few likes over the years.

Take them. Take them all.

Fuck off last season he was dog shite , a total and utter transformation, I can hardly believe it's the same player. If I didn't see his name on the team sheet I wouldn't believe it the same player

The weird thing about Coutts is that a lot of the things he was most criticised for haven't gone away. He still looks like he's running through treacle when he's tracking back, he still doesn't score many, he still doesn't get too many direct assists (as far as I can tell) and he still often looks knackered from about the 70 minute mark. And yet, his performances are demonstrably light years better than they were last season.

Classic case of the S2 hoards not being able to see beyond crunching tackles, winning headers and running around like a headless chicken. We love all that shyte !!

Well done on "coming out" Barney lad.

Golden boots Coutts been different gravy all season and, in the face of stiff competition (this season) from several others, is my first name on the team sheet and has been since last season. Absolutely vital in this Wilder side and how we set up.

You will probably be able to count on one hand in a full season how many times he has lost us possession of the football. No mean feat, even when it's going sideways, which I have no problem with at all.

Classic case of "I see the game better than you" syndrome.
So if I mention the one where he lost the ball towards the end of the game against Scunny and Billy dug him out by taking a booking (how many is that now for Billy?) that leaves four, Nah.

Dog shit under Clough
Embarrassment under Adkins
Wilder comes in
Coutts gets their lass some underwear from Victoria's Secret and suddenly he's decided he's a professional footballer, moral of the story. Keep the missus happy!

Also helps he's got Fleck who does his running and Duffy for sone flair, the middle trio works.

Quite comical how people can say on one hand player "x" is shit....their own fault etc. Yet on the other want managers replacing. As if managers have no control over how a player will play at all. I'm sure some people think a manager just picks a side and lets them do what they want.

We have been stuck in this trap for too long, where we get a new manager, replace players lose patience at the result and repeat. Adkins inherited a lot of players. Some, like Collins have always been limited in ability. He then signed a few more with limited ability, and moved out some of the players he inherited.

Some fans were scathing over certain players, apparently lacking effort, or having a poor attitude. Coutts was one for sure, as well as Freeman. Some players seemed to escape criticism but at the start of this season the fire aimed at Coutts and Freeman was incessant. Some people....me being one as far as Coutts was concerned, were a little more patient as they had seen a player of high quality and wanted to see more of that consistently.
Thankfully, Coutts has completely dispelled any questions over his attitude being the problem, and confirmed what I suspected writhin 3 months of Adkins. ADKINS DIDNT HAVE A FUCKING CLUE WHAT HE WAS DOING.

But still....Coutts has to "make up" for his poor showings last season as he then lacked effort. Bollocks.
I love Bash....love his desire and work rate it really is second to none. But overall quality from him last season was poor, and he was part of one of the worst sides in my memory. Scougall....terrible. According to some he's now wonderful despite doing very little to justify it. Reed....looked a future star under Clough....Adkins??

Point is, none of these players are Shit. None of them. They are utilised as a manager wants, and often against what they are best at. Some players are more adaptable than others and deal with it....that's life. But putting Coutts wide right....or in an attacking role was stupid. He was always a midfield general and ball player.

All hail Wilder

Quite the contrary. Coutts has admitted in interviews this season that he deliberately held back and played within himself in the last 2 seasons, because of his fear of being injured.

He has therefore expressly confirmed that he was not giving all the effort he should have been. This is a textbook example of a poor attitude.

I am as pleased as anyone that Coutts has improved this season. But the reason why he did not show better form in the last 2 years was that he did not make the effort to do so. That is appalling.

Yes 4. Bravo.

I would say it is a text book example of being psychologically damaged by a dreadful injury. Physical recovery is one thing, making a full recovery mentally takes a lot longer. I'd bet he still has nightmares about it.

From your postings over the past month or so I honestly don't think you have a clue about football.

I think he's had a couple of spells where I said there might be a player in him, and each time I said that he let me down massively. This season he's a joy to watch. Never have any disappointment over being wrong this way.

He's a luxury player. A good footballer that thrives in a good team. Put him in a struggling side and he will have a hard time flourishing. Paul himself may (probably would) disagree but it's just my view of him.

He's been fantastic under Wilder and was one of the stand out players against Scunthorpe last week. Lovely first touch and a good range of passing but you need hard working players playing well around him.

I was a bit critical of his performances when he first arrived but I can't fault him this season. The way we currently play suits him.

Well he's doubled his tally in this first half for the season then.
Bravo. Dictated the game. Again. Class act. Proper baller.

Bolton had a game plan, keep Coutts quiet, it worked for perhaps the first 10 minutes.

Awesome team performance for 2nd Satdi in a row. If you choose to count ONE misplaced pass ............

So he had no misplaced passes today and never gave the ball away?

Don't think anyone needs to eat humble pie re Coutts maybe if he had played OK previously and slating his was opinion but it's a fact he was pish since day one. He has finally shown himself to be the player he once was before joining us..

I just hope it's the Wilder effect and not the last year of contract effect

Bit of humble pie for me here and anyone else who fancies taking a bite. It's no secret that I have been one of his biggest critics, which was mainly based on his performances under Clough and Adkins and I was initially surprised by his sudden remarkable upturn in form under Wilder, and to be fair I didn't think he'd be able to sustain it and said so.

But I must say I was way off with that, he's managed to sustain it incredibly well and as we all know he's now a really important part of what has been and what will hopefully also end up as, a promotion side. All aboard the Coutts express to the Championship.

You are not alone. I was probably one of only 2 or 3 on here (if that) who stuck up for Coutts at the beginning of this season and wanted him in the team.

It's called understanding football and knowing a good player when you see one.

And by the same token I've said that Long, Done, Scougall won't make it and the Ebanks Landell is overrated and we are better without him.

Judge me later if you like but all will come true.

No he wasn't.

He was part of a pish side.
