Paul Beesley

We're repeating forum content, but for every positive quote there are two equal and opposite quotes:

Quote from who is Leeds' worst ever player....

"He drifted around the lower leagues to the end of his career, briefly popping back up at Leeds as a youth coach. Whilst we moan about the dross who have played in recent years, Beesley remains one of those players who is always mentioned when dragging up the names of the crap to have passed through the club. A strong candidate to win this section."

He also features in the same discussion between Man City fans...

"Paul Beesley. A terrible player, to top it all he scores an own goal at Maine Road in a game V Bury. Bury won 1-0".

I’m going to get pelters for this but ..... living proof you don’t have to be good at professional football to make a career out of it. Sorry but just my opinion.

UTB.
He’s not though. To even get to be a pro in those days (and now), you had to be stand out at youth level, playing for your city/county schoolboys side etc. As a kid, he was probably much better than anyone else at his school or he’d never have got into a club’s youth team.

Every year there are thousands of kids across the country who fail to make it through the youth teams, it was no different in those days. Just to become a professional you needed to be really good. My mate was on Chesterfield’s books as a kid so I have an idea of what it was like then.

If it's any consolation Silent Blade I am 20 mins in and understand about half of it!
I remember reading in the Green Un that Jostein Flo and Jonas Wirmola were invited to open an event at Meadowhall. Paul Beesley was asked to go with them to be the "interpreter". At the event Jonas (who spoke impeccable English) had to do the interpreting because the the newspaper reporters struggled to understand Beesley!

Tells a story about Charlie Hartfield getting stuck into the pigs before the 2-0 at the Lane. He wasnt in the squad and Bassett said to him 'when they arrive get into the tunnel and cause as much bollocks as you can' and off he went! Pinned palmer up by the throat! Tells a good one about Sunderland away from the year before too. Great set of lads that squad, still my favourites for everything they accomplished
No 2 for me behind the Adkins side.... Sorry, meant last season. Last year was genuinely my favourite season ever.

I would have added Gannon until he discovered he had a right foot away at Forest.
I still have my doubts about that goal. Was he just trying to control it? #rightshovel

Yep I remember it. Blades were losing but two late goals levelled it and we won the replay.

The replay a lot of us never got to see because of something that happened on the M62.

High winds and dangerous lampposts I think it was, that stopped Unitedites getting to Turf Moor

They're interviewing Matt Kilgallon for the same podcast this afternoon - be interesting to hear what he says about his time at the Lane

I remember Bassett on the season review video saying that the ref was going to call it off after half an hour due to frozen pitch - said they'd give it five minutes in which time Burnley went 2-0 up in front of 8000 travelling fans and realised they had no choice but to continue!

Weren’t Burnley in the 4th then? From memory they filled the entire away end and 1/4 of the south stand.

Think you may well be right, even though we didn’t get to the replay, I can remember the next nights Star, and Sir David of Bassett was upset by the racist taunting of Littlejohn and Deano by the Burnley fans

Yeah I listened on the radio and the commentator couldn’t believe the racist abuse. I also remember the fact the game started with half the away support still outside. Never seen us play there so hopefully will this season.

They had A block in the south stand. The crowd was given as about 22k but from the kop seemed nearly full to me. Maybe the wings of the kop were empty but everywhere else looked full to me.

I think there had been a crash & it was snowy if I remember. Got to the ground with about 15 mins to go, so turned around and went home. You’re right BD & AL got awful abuse that night.

We had been having dodgy turnstile operators for years until John Thurman "trapped" them when he was our CE in late 1990s

Exact opposite nowadays! I always remember Swansea at home in the 3rd last game of the season. True no away fans but every seat taken and the kop and John street packed but only 15k!!!

One of my favourite games that one. That was the season I started going regularly. My first witnessing of a pitch invasion.
