So according to Darren we are 24th in England - Play-Offs in the Championship. That seems about right and we're generally punching at about our weight. If you want to hark back to the "Glory Days" of Fatty Foulkes and Nudger Needham, then we'll surely be higher - but that has even less relevance than Forest banging on about their European Cup wins, Coventry their FA Cup etc etc, so if Lenners is banging on about the under-achievement of 85 years without a trophy, that has to be hope over expectation as Foxy says. Or to put it another way - to expect automatic promotion or Premiership status, or silverware is an unreasonable expectation - even though it's a hope all of us share.
Dreams, hopes, expectations, demands - people need to be very clear about where they stand, especially when basing their stance on limited insights, and when the potential of unrealistic expectation is turning our club into the next Leeds, Wednesday or Forest.
It has worried me for most of this season (just gone) that the general tone of our Forum has been of frustration taking the form of expectations. It's certainly possible for Forums (not just ours) to build up a critical mass of opinion that changes the way many of us view and feel about the Blades, and may even change the Club's decisions. In some cases that is all to the good - such as Robson - but in more complex times like this (IMO made more complicated by the financial situation throughout football - and in KMcC's case, property and construction - the injury situation, even Paddy's cough etc) and the fact that most of us never get to see the full picture - IMO some of us need to be more measured and thoughtful in how we show our frustration.
This isn't to say that the Club are above criticism - and there have been some well made points by various "knockers" over the last months - but there's been a lot a dross too. As Lenners has said on numerous occassions - "this is a forum which is about debate" - and IMO too many "knockers" have failed to contribute thoughtful "debate" - their posts being more like vitriolic rants.
Too much uninformed ranting -> unrealistic expectations -> instability -> failure - - and we'd be partly to blame.
