Robson calls for patience from Blades fans

SHEFFIELD UNITED manager Bryan Robson has appealed for patience as his players prepare for two home games with the power to shape their season.

United entertain Southampton tomorrow before Cardiff City visit Bramall Lane on Tuesday and Robson, whose team lie 16th in the Championship table, has set them a six-point target.

United are unbeaten at home since Robson's appointment in May but a series of disappointing performances on the road have badly affected their league position.

However, as several key members of his squad return from injury and suspension, Robson says it is too early to judge United's progress.

Robson, who has been linked with Middlesbrough's Lee Cattermole, said: "We all want to get promoted. But I do hope the supporters can be a little bit patient.

"Brian Kidd (his assistant) and myself want to try and do things a little bit differently and it is taking a little while for people to get to grips with that, but that was probably always going to be the case.

"But two wins from these next two games will put us right back to where we want to be.

"We've played some difficult games and, although we've been disappointing away, we've beaten Wolves and West Brom at home already.

"These are the teams who, together with us, everyone expects to be right up there.

Robson is also pressing ahead with his efforts to sign a midfielder on loan with Cattermole being linked with Bramall Lane.

I think that Robbo is his own worst enemy at times, it is refreshing to have such an honest manager but he doesn't half set himself up for a fall.

Recently he has made public statements that loan players have been on the verge of signing, leaving many fans on the edge of their seats in anticipation of new arrivals. Weeks later; nobody has arrived and some fans feel let down.

I honestly think that he should not give any indication how close he is to signing players until the deal is complete; why bother raising expectation levels until you are sure that you can deliver?

He now comes out and asks for patience but in the same statement he admits that he is aiming for 2 wins from the next 2 games.

I'm sure that we all share Robbos aims on this one but i fear he may have his words thrown back at him by the doubters if we fail to win both games.

It's all a bit of a fine line though really.

If he doesn't mention signings till theres no going back then he'd be critisised for apparently doing nothing. If he said we should be patient and failed to say we are aiming for 6 points then he'd be accused of not taking the situation seriously enough and throwing away matches with the excuse of needing to be patient.

I'd hate to be anyone connected with a club responsible for giving press statements these days, they are used so often out of context and as ammunition for people's own agenda's :)

I agree that its a bit of a tight-rope, although if i were robbo i would just say that i'm continuing to look at players rather then qualifying what stage i was at with regards to signing players. I would definately avoid giving any kind of estimates for new player arrivals as more often then not you end up with egg on your face.

Like i said, i think his honesty sets him up for a fall but i for one appreciate his honesty in other circumstances so i can let it slide.

fine line, tightrope, is this a metaphor thread, well I think its a game of two halves and on paper we should do well, but... we play on grass.

At the end of the day................ the grass may be a little longer!

:p

If it is a metaphor thread then your post doesn't belong here, your examples fit more succiently in the catagory of cliches. But thanks for playing and try again soon :-)
