Morning Blades,
I think we’ve all had a little time to let the unthinkable sink in. The whole mess has got me thinking about our past, our setbacks and how difficult a club we are to manage. As a Blade of some 40 years, I will be adding Wilder’s departure to the comical list of setbacks I’ve witnessed down the years: Mark Stein’s last minute killer, numerous play off final defeats, losing to Wednesday at Wembley, fire sales of our two best strikers on one day and lots of managers who weren’t up to it. All of these took a toll on our progress and the belief of our fans. Pre-Wilder, I’d lost all faith and expected nothing from the team anymore.
That said, he restored my love and belief in our special club and brought back a little pride. Part of the problem here is that we have only ever had a few great managers in our history who have galvanised the team and supporters. With this in mind, I hope the gamble of letting him walk pays off, and someone comes in who can keep the flame alive. My heart says that we have the staff and players to go again next season. My head says, “you’ve seen the decline before when we have setbacks”.
I’m crossing my fingers that we get a unique manager who can manage our special club. Unfortunately, history says otherwise.
