Diego was set up to fail last night. The lad's never played left midfield in his life. He's a centre forward so why stick him out on the wide?
Another strange decision in a long line of strange decisions at SUFC if you ask me..
I'm not being snide but I'm curious why this was your first post.

I've seen him play on the left more than once.

In my opinion, his most effective position would be "in the hole" playing off a main centre forward.

I could only follow the game on the radio so I was reliant on Keith Edwards' comments - he slated him for giving the ball away (gave it away 4 times pretty much in a row bringing the ball out of defence according to Edwards), but in fairness he slagged off united generally - Murphy for ball watching, generally negative and slow build up play, tactically fearful and risk averse approach, not taking the right positions to threaten ..."I mean its Hartlepool we are playing". Only players he seemed to have any good to say about was Baxter and JCR from what I heard.
Keith Edwards being negative? Never :)

Thoughts on JCR's ten men/balotelliesque celebration?

He said in a recent interview that his favourite position is behind the strikers or on the right wing. Unfortunately with Jose and JCR we're quite well equipped there

I can't possibly comment Cyprus, I have to be honest I never listen to Radio Sheffield.

United were poor, very harsh on Murphy, after his introduction United were far more of an attacking threat, which allowed JCR that much more freedom.

In fairness JCR didn't do a great deal in the second half before Murph came on.

As for Mcgahey, if he gave it away four times bringing the ball out of defence, then so be it, at least he was attempting to bring it out rather than just hoof it.

Perhaps the biggest impression that I was left with after last night, was that we looked more like a League 2 side than a potential championship one.:(

Again, I thought McGahey did well, Basham was ok, but Davies and Harris were....dreadful.

Didn't go myself so can't give an opinion on which of you is right but Clough picked Harris out as one of the best performers!

We were the better of two poor teams to be honest.

Again, I thought McGahey did well, Basham was ok, but Davies and Harris were....dreadful. Turner was ok between the sticks.

In the midfield Baxter was the class act, and the creativity disappeared once he went off. Louie Reed worked hard, mcGinn started brightly but tired considerably in the second half to the point it was difficult to find him on the pitch,

Diego looked out of sorts, no sharpness, apart from a couple of promising runs in the second half, Harris often choosing to play an aimless ball to the opposition rather than the ball to his feet.

He may be just back from Brazil, :), and he worked hard, but unless the ball is about a yard from the goaline, Porter isn't going to score, and even then its not a certainty.

The introduction of Murphy, gave the team a better balance and allowed JCR a bit more freedom.

McNulty, did very well for the winner and looked a handful at times.

Absolutely spot on report of the team last night....IMO

I like Harris, but last night as soon he got booked in the first 10 minutes, he didn't want to make a challenge.

He was skinned a couple of times in the second half and his ball distribution was dreadful.

Thoughts on JCR's ten men/balotelliesque celebration?

Thought it was hilarious saying that I love abit of self-confidence in a player, least he's not going to hide and stop trying things that's why I prefer JCR to Flynn on current form. Even though I am a big fan of Flynn when he's not confident he doesn't take those risks that he was doing towards the backend of last season when he was on-fire.

Would love to see Flynn gain that confidence back sooner rather than later as he can skin a full back inside out when he believes in his ability. Overall it's nice to have competition for places out-wide (just need to sort that forward line out!)

Overall thoughts on last night, we played 'alright' but just 'alright'. They had a few half chances first half but overall I never felt we were under the cosh & massively threatened & we rightly took the lead through Baxter's fine solo effort. They scored not long after the restart through a deflected effort & we took longer than we should to put the game to bed but eventually did after McNulty's tenacity got him in & he played JCR in to finish it off.

Turner - 6 - not a lot to do really, caught a few routine crosses & his kicking was pretty decent

Davies - 6 - not at his best but then again he's not a full back, still think he was wrongly dropped last Saturday
McGahey - 6 - played well for me another who was wrongly dropped last weekend
Basham - 6 - much prefer him at centre half as he doesn't have to influence the game as much in terms of getting on the ball & making us tick which he hasn't done so far in a R&W shirt
Harris - 6.5 - a few wideward slices into touch but played with real drive & purpose last night. Obviously recognizes the competition for places in his spot & wants to make a mark to make the spot his own

JCR - 7.5 - our most dangerous man all night, always looks to go on the front foot which I like
Reed - 7 - worked his socks off, got stuck in & his distribution was impressive. He didn't waste much and sprayed it with some fantastic knocks second half
Baxter - 8 - the main man. Everything went through him first half, first in the deep role dictating then when he moved into a more advanced role. Working a lot harder this season & as I say it's important we keep him fit as he makes us tick
McGinn - 6 - started brightly then faded, just feel like he doesn't stamp his authority & influence the game enough
Diego - 6 - was neat & tidy with his distribution but didn't impose himself enough. In saying that there wasn't many occasions he had to stand his man up & get at him. Reckon he'll be out on-loan once Clough finds the right side for him to go to

Porter - 6 - Ahh Christopher, Christopher, Christopher. He works hard, a lot harder than Higdon, he got in good goal-scoring positions & he should have scored a few. Is he the answer to our forward line firing on all cylinders & being feared by defences up & down the country? No. Is he our own Chris Porter who plays the guitar & likes Alan Carr? Yes, yes he is

SUBS:

McNulty - 7 - Like the lad a lot. Everytime I've seen him play he looks bright, got a bit of pace about him, gets stuck in & works his knackers off. I'd love to see him start uptop with a partner, he could do some damage in this league

Murphy - 6 - not really effective when he came on, had one run that was crowded out. Last season's Murphy will come back we've just got to be patient with him

Collins - N/A - uptop for last ten minutes. Was more comedy value than anything else. Won a few flick-ons & ran about abit

No - a win is a win. Okay, its in a trophy which most lower league clubs struggle to show any great enthusiasm for, but I think we need to get some perspective here. The two goals we scored were really well taken. Baxter is a quality player, if a bit susceptible to a knock or two. JCR took his strike relly well. But according to witness accounts, the monkeyhangers were 'well up for it' in a scrappy match. Shouldn't that read, "We were well in control for long spells of the game with numerous good efforts on goal from the six non-regular second stringers playing including our three new signings coming off the bench in a 4-0 pasting for beleagured Hartlepool. After sixty minutes and at 3-0 up we changed the formation and didn't allow Hartlepool past the halfway line."

Instead it sounds like Hartlepool's team talk centred round the Blades being a misfiring bunch at the moment with some really shaky performances and an inability to dominate and defend effectively. Once that is in the heads of the opposition you suddenly become one goal away from humiliation.

If we were top with a settled side that,s probably how it would have read.

But well into the season our manager still isnt sure of his strongest eleven and tactically leaves a lot to be desired, very worrying

Nice goal and set up by Reed...Pools goal took a bad deflection, but nobody within a country mile to close the lad down after the ball is headed out.Good finish by JCR after good work by Mcnulty.

So, in summary.

A quality performance against a team currently at the bottom of the football leagues.

UTB!

You must really hate Utd ,I know pigs with more affinity to Utd than you ,if its done to gain attention ,its worked but now getting dull.

Sitwell, you and I have known each other for many years on these forums. Well enough to know that I know, that you know, that that statement is undiluted bollocks. Firstly, you don't know pigs with more affinity to United than me. What a bizarre, ridiculous claim. Secondly, I don't hate United. I am serially sick to the back teeth of being lied to over, and over and over again. I am slightly less sick of apologists and optimists who, in the case of some pretty blinding evidence, turn to the personal when items like me and metal and a few others start to colour in the bleedin' obvious when it comes to how our clubs is being dealt with. That's not 'hate your club' stuff. That's 'caring about your club' stuff. Just because I am not in the 'Leave it to Nigel - he hasn't found his best eleven' camp ... you know, the sort of fans who if we get bummed dry by Swindon will say, 'well, the sun came out in the second half' ... doth not make me a hater. I hate the lies and spin that surrounds the Blades and I hate the way people obfuscate the patent reality that we are looking like another fucking season in the third division. It's all there, Sitwell. You can tart up the truth as much as you want, but we are not strong enough as a side to be promoted this season without some major restructuring out on the park, and that means five - at the least - better players in for the rest of the season and a twenty plus goalscorer. We are ten games in and that goalscorer should be on at least six by now (to allow for suspensions, lean spells, rests and injuries)

And as for attention, no ... I don't think so. I'd love it, next may for United to be promoted and for me to apologise on these boards for my comments and dismissive nature. At the moment, I am quite confident I won't be doing that. But I think I will be listening to the same old, tired old excusers hopin' and a prayin' that a new sunrise will happen on our club and 'next season' it will be okay. You, yourself need to stop being an excuser and an apologiser and use your considerable gravitas and intelligence to add to the gathering questioners regarding where the fucking money and investment is. Because if you think 'this is it', then we are fucked.

I admire your spirit for tryin Sitters me owd, but some are beyond help. Hear them game in game out, shoutin down at the pitch, "gerritforrad!!" and more colorful projections. The ones that live to moan, mi owd grandad, rest his soul used to say. SUFC have it's unfair share of them and as is appropriate, they are freely allowed to opine.

Personally, Im of the ilk that waiting and keeping my powder dry before looking down the beer bottle of sullen defeatism, is a better philosophy. IMHO, its a pity as they often seem like intelligent people. Maybe that's their biggest problem. :p

You say you don't seek attention, but a few of us on here still remember "A Blade Supreme". ;)

It's no weirder than trying Collins up front or switching players into other positions. It was only Hartlepool in the Paint Pot, why not experiment in a relatively competitive environment? You learn more than in friendly games or reserve matches.

I find this to be an interesting standpoint. I might be wrong but although you say you'd love to do it, it sounds like you'd be happier at not having to apologise. Or at least perfectly contented.

No. I will be delighted to be proven wrong (even if it means some berk trawling the archives to recall that I once slagged Nick Blackman off one evening at a particular date/timestamp/lat and long)

But at the moment, given United's return of service to us supporters, do you feel confident that they will be promoted?

I don't at all agree that the two should be linked (United's ROS / promotion) but to answer your question... yep. I am however an idiot that goes into EVERY game hoping and indeed thinking that we will win.

Why not? Isn't that the mission of every football team? Win games and strive for more success?
