good win tonight. anyone go? how did diego play?

I would love us to win this competition one year.

It is a bit of a joke competition but I'd also like to win it...
And if it gives Diego a run out and gets Baxter and JCR match fit then I'm all for it.
It sounds like Diego was quiet though in fairness

Played shite again.
Baxter scored a good goal in off post then was subbed at half time.
Diego didn't do much, played out wide, subbed for Murphy.
Collins came on for Porter and played up front!
JCR scored with a shot through crowd of players.
Their goal was a deflection!

The ability to name a completely different team to Saturday makes this tournament worthwhile. It's a shit cup, but getting some of the fringe players and those coming back from game time is invaluable.

Sticking Collins upfront is probably also worthwhile. Considering we've had a few games already where we've brought on all subs and are chasing the game, having a big awkward lump running about up front is useful, but enough about Higdon ;)

A scrappy game, Hartlepool were up for it, especially in the second half, once they had levelled, with a heavy deflection off Harris. Porter missed 5 chances in the game, including 3 in one scramble. Diego, sadly hasn`t stepped up to the mans game yet, he struggles in U21 games (yes, I know he scored a hat trick, but he didn`t play well- honest!), he was knocked off the ball far too easily, and the confidence drained from him. Baxter was the difference, once pushed further forward, the one bit of quality in the half. In the second half, after Porters misses, Murphy replaces Diego, and hit the woodwork from Davies corner, before McNulty did well to feed Campbell-Ryce, and he arrowed it into the bottom left corner, across Flinders. Just about deserved on chances, but a poor match, low on quality. One step closer to Wembley!!

The Collins up front situation was surely to rest what few forwards we have, given Higgster is in sussies for three games (they should absolutely do that as a further punishment :)) having gone 2-1 up as well as protecting what we had.

Another cup victory for the Cup Tarts :)

My prediction for next draw?
Away at Preston
(balls are being warned as we type ;))

I reckon Porter was tired and Clough wanted to maintain aerial strength for defensive set pieces without changing formation.

Agree Bergers. That was one of the things I was inferring but I also think that he wanted to preserve what few resources we have in the striking dept for the league games

So, in summary.

A quality performance against a team currently at the bottom of the football leagues.

UTB!

You're a hard man to please at the moment:D

No - a win is a win. Okay, its in a trophy which most lower league clubs struggle to show any great enthusiasm for, but I think we need to get some perspective here. The two goals we scored were really well taken. Baxter is a quality player, if a bit susceptible to a knock or two. JCR took his strike relly well. But according to witness accounts, the monkeyhangers were 'well up for it' in a scrappy match. Shouldn't that read, "We were well in control for long spells of the game with numerous good efforts on goal from the six non-regular second stringers playing including our three new signings coming off the bench in a 4-0 pasting for beleagured Hartlepool. After sixty minutes and at 3-0 up we changed the formation and didn't allow Hartlepool past the halfway line."

Instead it sounds like Hartlepool's team talk centred round the Blades being a misfiring bunch at the moment with some really shaky performances and an inability to dominate and defend effectively. Once that is in the heads of the opposition you suddenly become one goal away from humiliation.

We were the better of two poor teams to be honest.

Again, I thought McGahey did well, Basham was ok, but Davies and Harris were....dreadful. Turner was ok between the sticks.

In the midfield Baxter was the class act, and the creativity disappeared once he went off. Louie Reed worked hard, mcGinn started brightly but tired considerably in the second half to the point it was difficult to find him on the pitch,

Diego looked out of sorts, no sharpness, apart from a couple of promising runs in the second half, Harris often choosing to play an aimless ball to the opposition rather than the ball to his feet.

He may be just back from Brazil, :), and he worked hard, but unless the ball is about a yard from the goaline, Porter isn't going to score, and even then its not a certainty.

The introduction of Murphy, gave the team a better balance and allowed JCR a bit more freedom.

McNulty, did very well for the winner and looked a handful at times.

Diego was set up to fail last night. The lad's never played left midfield in his life. He's a centre forward so why stick him out on the wide?
Another strange decision in a long line of strange decisions at SUFC if you ask me..

I thought McGahey did well,

I could only follow the game on the radio so I was reliant on Keith Edwards' comments - he slated him for giving the ball away (gave it away 4 times pretty much in a row bringing the ball out of defence according to Edwards), but in fairness he slagged off united generally - Murphy for ball watching, generally negative and slow build up play, tactically fearful and risk averse approach, not taking the right positions to threaten ..."I mean its Hartlepool we are playing". Only players he seemed to have any good to say about was Baxter and JCR from what I heard.

setting him up to fail rather than succeed. Flynn needs more games so i thought he would have played to allow Diego to play a more familiar role

I'm not sure how anyone, regardless of a lack of game-time, can not find a gap in this situation...

...or then have a chance from here...
