Sheffield United will unveil Paddy McCarthy as their latest new signing this morning, The Star can confirm.

The Crystal Palace defender, who is poised to make his debut at Chesterfield tomorrow, travelled to South Yorkshire last night after agreeing to join on a month long emergency loan.

However, sources close to Selhurst Park, where former United manager Neil Warnock took charge five weeks ago, have indicated the arrangement could be extended until January if it proves a success.

The Premier League club are also thought to be subsidising a significant portion of McCarthy’s wages for the duration of his stay with Nigel Clough’s side.

United are known to have fought off competition from a host of Championship clubs to secure the 31-year-old’s services.

McCarthy, who started his career at Manchester City before representing Leicester City and Charlton Athletic, has made two appearances for Palace since August.

Both of those came in the Capital One Cup, against Walsall and Newcastle.

Deal between Cloughy and NW struck at 125th celebration bash last week I reckon

Cloughy invited Neil over to his house to see all his trophies and Neil invited Cloughy down to Cornwall to see all his tractors

...poor old Collins...I guess?

Good signing. Let's hope he's ready to go straight in. Who will make way? I'm guessing Collins will continue as well.

Excellent signing, McCarthy spoke to Warnock who sold him the idea of coming to us despite others in for him according to James Shield

Spoke highly of Clough too. He gave some thought to being away from his family, but as soon as he spoke to NC he knew within a couple of minutes that this is where he wanted to play his football. High recommendation indeed, and Warnock spoke highly about the club too, so his role in this was instrumental.

Speaks well, I always like that in a player- don't know why because most of the good players a fucktards.
The only negative I took from the interview is that he's got a young family back in London so I can't see it becoming a season long loan at any point, but you never know

Quality player and experienced leader.
Very happy with this signing.
With McNulty and Higdon starting to click, Baxter and potentially, Diego, who is now firing, up front, personally, I feel the defense was more important than the attack at the moment.
Well done Warnock and Clough!

Good player, but the talk of waiting until the right time for the 93 day loan scenario was just another load of bullshit.

One month we've got him for,and judge is right in a way because he's going to push someone out of the team for what?one montho_OThat player, whoever that might be(my guess is Collins)is not going to be happy that he's getting shoved out for a loanee all for the sake of one month. It's a strange one to say the least, but like i said at the start,he's a very good player, especially for the level we're at.

My bets are he will find it hard to force his way back into the starting 11 at Palace who are playing quite well. I expect the loan to be extended, if it proves as successful as Brayford.

Fabulous loan signing. You never know if these things will work out or not, however, it's a great boost for team and supporters alike; it shows our opponents that we mean business.
Let's hope that the six week loan is either extended or that he rejoins us later in the season.

125 dinners do indeed have their uses ;)

I didn't think you could extend that kind of loan, and that's the reason for the post above yours.

"The experienced 31-year-old centre-back has penned an initial one-month loan deal with the League One side and goes straight into Nigel Clough's plans for Saturday's local derby with Chesterfield." - SKY SPORTS WEBPAGE

So possibly for longer if their wording is correct.

That's what I saw, Cyprus, only going by the reports Wizardy, dont know the technicalities. You may know better than I, just seems to be the way N.C. does things.

Btw, One of the reports or interviews I read mentioned the possibility of extending until January. Of course, reporters balls many things up!

Tis what it is. Good signing at this moment but we do need something a bit more long term. Can't get too excited right now but if he did extend his loan it would be an excellent bit of business.

I think whether we can extend won't just be down to how McCarthy does in this month, but how Palace do too. If they continue with their good form, why bring him back to not be on the bench again? If they ship a load of goals though, or get an injury innthat area, NW might want him back immediately.

I predict he'll come in for Collins and within 45 mins the away end will start up a "Paddy! Paddy! Paddy!" chant.

Initial month loan is ideal for both parties. .If he does well expect him to stay longer

don't think he will stay longer.. Neil has sent him here to get match sharp. that really good Aussie centre back of theirs has international duty after xmas .. good signing though. now we just need a centre forward (ducks)
