given that I'm going to London a few times during the summer, Come on London Blades, Should I invest in an Oyster card? Can another person use the same card,ie can you lend or borrow these? would they be available to buy around Stanmore?

I had one from my last trip to London, which I just added a bit of cash to. Saves you a fair bit, as a single tube journey is normally 4-5 quid now if you just by a ticket each time.

Plus with an oyster you can get buses and other forms of public transport. It'll charge you up to a normal daily travel card, but then won't charge you any more that day for as many journeys as you want.

So for example for me on Saturday, getting in early to KingsX will likely be making 4-5 tube trips throughout the day, but it'll only charge me up to £7 on my oyster. You do need to pre-load it with some cash but if you're going back to London anytime I think it makes sense. I'll certainly be keeping mine handy for future London trips (hopefully Palace etc next season ;) )

Your best bet is to order one online now and get it posted - when we went to London last time took us 10 minutes of form filling at Paddington before we got it sorted.

Oh but, you can't really lend/borrow them, like you can't travel around together with another person and keep swapping the card over each journey.

Loch Fyne do sum decent oysters ......... mind yer yer'll have to put up with the 'political' mob

Worth getting if you're going to down in London for a while. Two people can't use the card on the same trip, but there's no reason you can't give your card to someone else for the day.

You can top the card up and use it as a pay as you go , or you can put a travelcard on it, though you will be restricted to whatever zone travelcard you've purchased.

It depends. If youre only doing a couple of journeys a day theyre ok, but if you plan on zipping around all day youre much better off with a day travelcard.

The Oyster card recognises when you are zipping around and caps your costs as a day travel card accordingly.

Though using an Osyter with prepay topup will take money off per journey until you reach the day travelcard cost so you never pay more than an all day card. Plus it still works out easier as you don't have to bother buying the ticket before your first journey and don't have to fiddle to get the card in the slot (ooh er) each time you go through a gate.

Oyster's the only way to travel, you can top up online or at a station. It loads for the day so you never spend more than the cost of a Travelcard. Whilst you can't lend it someone else when you are travelling and using it you can lend it to a friend who is going to London on another occasion.
You can load money on by card or even coins at a machine. I never have more than £10 on mine just in case I lose it.

If you register it online, you can get a refund if it is lost/stolen.
As a Blade living in London, I would recommend getting one as it is much cheaper to pay by oyster
i.e. Zone 1 single trip: Cash-£4.30 Oyster-£2.00 ; Bus single trip: Cash-£2.30 Oyster-£1.35
It costs about £3 deposit for the card but that is refundable if/when you give the card back.

Worth enrolling for the auto-top up if you're going to be there regularly. Saves you having to try to remember how much is on the card from your last visit or worrying about whether the current journey will cost more than the balance (if you need to travel outside of Zone 1 - I enrolled after getting caught out on the DLR).

You can check your balance on line. I go into London on the tube about once a month and always double check online first to make sure how much I have and if needed topup before getting on the train.

Ken Livingston said there was a problem with Oyster cards and that they sometimes take too much money off you. Ill be going from St Pancrass to Wembley and back unless we win so I doubt it would be worth the hassel to get one, I dont intend to go back there in any hurry either

;) Livingstons a dick though... theyre great and if you somehow get overcharged its easy to get a refund, they even sent me a cheque!

Protip: If you have any spare Oyster cards you can hand them in at an underground station and get a fiver back on each one.

it's so much less hassle having an oyster with an auto-top up. especially in the summer if you're using the tube through major stations and don't want to spend 9 hours a day queing behind Italian teenagers at ticket machines and barriers. if you ever lose it, the customer service and replacement service is very efficient and helpful - posted out same day in my experience. if you get one today online and credit it up it'll likely be sent out today and with you before the weekend.
