It’s disappointing to lose....but it’s worth examining the reasons why.
We’ve said our team play a slick but simple passing game.....it’s formulaic and doesn’t require the highest quality players but it’s massively effective on a consistent level.
Its been seen over the years....that our system ALWAYS struggles against ultra defensive teams that pack out their penalty area with bodies.
The solutions to solve our weakness are
1: Buy a player who can dribble and create their own chances (Duffy and Brooks have been the only players who could do this).
2: Buy a big physical lump who can stand near the penalty spot and cause havoc (we’ve had Hanson and Madine doing this job but doubt this tactic can work in the PL)
3: Buy players who can score goals from outside the box....in fact our players rarely even try to shoot from outside the box.
The reason why I don’t think we need to worry about tonight.
You have to give credit to Steve Bruce....he’s seen us at close hand last season managing both Aston Villa and Sheff Wednesday.
He tried expansive football with AV and was massacred 4-1 ..so he parked the bus stinking the place out with SW and got a deserved 0-0 draw.
So tonight it was no surprise that Newcastle would be ultra defensive/ negative and that tactic worked again showing how we don’t have the quality to break threw a defensive wall.
However I doubt many other clubs will come to BL and play like Newcastle ie put everyone in defence. This is the reason why we’ve done well this season because teams are more attacking and trying to beat us....so it suits our style more. Tonight I did think about what could have happened if we had Mark Duffy to come on as 2nd half sub...he could produce moments of magic running with the ball to overcome a packed defence.
