If we pick up a couple of good results early in the campaign, I can see the mid to lower level Prem teams making adjustments to cope with our style of play (which would be a compliment in itself).
We’ll need to be more savvy and cautious in the way we employ our usual style of overlapping defenders though.
What scares me is the speed at which Prem teams can move the ball from back to front and counter attack. Even average teams like Bournemouth, Watford, Palace etc. have fast athletic players who are capable of hitting us on the break at lightning speed if we lose possession.
If we try it against the likes of Sterling and Salah, they’ll have our pants down on a regular basis!
Performing well at the Lane is the key for me though, and I reckon we’ll bloody a few noses along the way (Arsenal, I’m looking at you!).
I also reckon we’re set up to be every neutral’s favourite...just hope it’s not going to be in a patronising way (eg. Huddersfield, Blackpool etc)
Wilder’s proved that he’s capable of tightening us up at the back after Villa away and this gives me confidence that we’re capable of playing the sort of pragmatic football we’ll need to stay up...without completely abandoning the delicious brand of play that’s got us up there in the first place

i’ve maintained for years that the top two leagues are actually three leagues
there’s the prem top six who are sponsored by nations not just the local butcher done good
then there is 7th prem to mid table champs and bottom 15 of the champs
we’re in the second league.. i don’t fear anyone in this league.. forest, derby and bristol are interchangeable with palace, newcastle, brighton ie cannon fodder for the top 6
i think we’ll do ok.. Neil bottled it a bit i can’t see Wilder/Knill doing the same

Spot on re NW and he’s not learned from it. ‘Repeating the same thing multiple times and expecting different results’. Our away performances under him were inexcusable at best.

Can I be controversial here and say that if we are going to continue to play in the same way, we need a centre back with the speed of a whippet to deal with the counter attacks that will be inevitable.

we’ll cause teams with lazy players that don’t track problems not necessarily city or liverpool whos players are talented AND work hard

Lots has been said over the past week about our style of play.

It seems it was introduced to overcome teams in league one who'd arrived at the Lane to 'park the bus'.

Not sure how many teams we are going to come up against in the Premier league that will be adopting a similar tactic.

We need to have an array of well rehearsed set pieces in our armory that can get us some goals.

I can see Alan Knill working very closely with Ollie Norwood in perfecting this.

Don’t believe that’s correct, I’m sure the system started away at Gillingham and has just evolved and improved from there.

The way to combat the system is to park the bus, this is what league 1 teams eventually learnt to do. Fleetwood were fantastic at this at the Lane, they’d wait for the rare opportunity, then break in numbers, making our system look ineffective.

Wilder knew we were in trouble, so he brought in James Hanson, this meant we became a much bigger danger just lumping it in the box. Teams knew if they sat back defending deep then Hanson would cause havoc with Sharp picking up the pieces, so they pushed up more, then we could play our normal overlapping centre back game again.

For key points for me regards our system is PACE, if the opposition have quicker players we might be in trouble, Derby away in the 2nd half showed the concerns when committing too many men forward against a side with pace who can run with the ball.

Another key point is confidence to use it, remember we will have some new players so everyone needs to buy into it and be a really well drilled unit. Think we’ll have confidence at home but away might see defensive performances similar to one at Elland Road a few week back.

Agree, about the set pieces, this improvement has earned us a few extra points this season,

For me, we need to add some pace up front and some muscle in midfield!

Wilder is switched on well enough, and has said what we need - addition of players to the squad who are young, energetic, hungry, enthusiastic (plus a few other boxes to be ticked). He will be looking for super-fit young players who can cover miles at speed in order to create time and space for our older heads to carry on with the craftmanship. Our average age is currently 27, and that will have to come down a couple of notches for sure.
I think he'll be more focussed on getting pace into our defensive line in order to allow us to play our usual style where possible. Trust him (can't believe I felt the need to say that!)

We can pass the ball as well as most of the best teams in English football. The difference in the Premier League is the speed at which it is done. We will need to be able to pass more quickly whilst maintaining the necessary accuracy. Can`t be giving it away cheaply; It will be hard work winning it back.

Showed an heat map illustrating our roving centre backs (I would love to see that again after an home match)

Given 'our' then battling qualities the Wigan game was a nailed on Blades supergame win a la Leeds in the League Cup (Jags wonder goal), v Forest (play off SF), v Arsenal (Jags in goal). It just didn't happen.

For me, the major factor was the Hulse injury. Tevez was just a potential get out. Just bloody typical he scored for the 'Con Merchants' on the last day.

I’d have more respect for Warnock if every time he had brought a team back to the Lane since he hadn’t acted like an absolute nob.
