Our Fans Are Rubbish

Jesus ... when I read some of this in fighting it fucking embarrassing !

We’re 2 points off a friggin play off play off place in our first season back in the championship

Yes a disappointing result but it could be a shite sight worse have a look across the city
And still most of the fans can’t get behind the team. I find that a bit embarrassing too,.

the only things that annoyed me about our fans today was having a go at any one of our players who made a mistake or didn't shoot and the person at the back of the kop who wouldn't stop blowing that fucking whistle even when we were on the attack

the only part of the kop that ever chants anymore is the back of the kop but its becoming less and less each game

How are we reknowned for having a noisy stadium? The atmosphere for years has been good in the odd high profile game and poor other than that. I think people have this romanticised view of the atmosphere at the Lane.

Historically the fans have turned up for the big games, the players on the other hand.....

From my perspective.. in "run of the mill" games we are (and have been) no different to the majority of other teams. In games when the result is of great significance, then we do turn up the atmosphere and rightly have a reputation for doing so.

Now.. historically a result of great significance would have included league games against "big" teams, such as Manchester United in their pomp. But these days we get to watch the "best" teams all the time and are much more familiar with every aspect of them. That has created a degree of familiarity and the aura is diminished. Football just ain't as special as it used to be and it's harder to get that passion going.

Or it may be I am getting older and more cynical.

How is it any different now to how it used to be? What do you mean we play the big teams all the time?

We haven't played Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea at the Lane for over 10 years.

It's different because when we feasted at the top table we were less familiar with the "top" teams.

I remember a fantastic atmosphere against a Spurs game in the league in my first season. And, though I don't remember which season it was, I remember sat on the Kop for a match against QPR when I could hear someone whistling a tune in another part of the stand.

Good post. I wonder how many of the people who liked your post offer any vocal support to our team, despite moaning about the lack of it.

I suspect very few.

What a great argument. How many people against Brexit are willing to get in there with the EU and negotiate over in Brussels? Not many, so of course they shouldn’t have an opinion.

Three points yesterday would have taken United level with Boro and Derby. If that’s not of great significance, then what is?

Because the result in itself would not see us achieve a playoff place, or progress to a semi final, or win a derby.

It is significant, but not of great significance. I see a distinction that may explain the difference in atmosphere.

I get the distinction between yesterday and an FA Cup quarter final, for example. But yesterday was one of the biggest games of the campaign and in the first half, there was virtually nothing (albeit there was an improvement in the second). At a 90th minute corner, the roar was deafening. Where was that 60 minutes earlier? Never mind - I’ll await the ‘football in a library’ chant at Brentford :D

That analogy is just bizarre. Do you apply it to everything? i.e. no one who ever complains about something should ever be expected to actually do something because they can't negotiate with the EU in Brussles? You do realise, to offer vocal support to the team they just have to open their mouths during the game they're at, whereas no one is going to let them through the door in Brussels?

No, I don’t. Just as I don’t agree with the ‘if you think the Lane atmosphere is shit, you must move your seat to BLUT, leave your mates/family/kids or whoever you go with to sit with a bunch of 20 blokes you’ve never met and sing with them, or you’re not entitled to an opinion’ school of thought. Is that any less bizarre?

Yesterday's game was as significant as the last match and our next. If it comes down to a match at home when if we win we claim a play off spot, the atmosphere will crank up accordingly.

It's just a theory, because there has to be some reason. Of course, it could be more people are looking at their phones, or worrying about Brexit, don't really know. I'm as excited at football as I ever have been. :)

Exactly. The next game is now the biggest of the season at this stage. Do fans really think ‘Na, Forest at home isn’t big enough to make noise’? It’s the first season back in the Championship! (That was a genuine question by the way, not aimed at you HillmortonBlade. I’m intrigued as to the reasons behind it being a bit flat)

Pretty sure we beat Oxford at home that season. Was one of my first games. Think it was 2-1 Blades but don’t remember who scored.

Just checked and you're right.

Maybe we were losing 1-0 but I just remember some fans really getting on the players' backs that day despite us closing in on promotion, and HB being annoyed about it.

What a load of bollocks. Are you for real?

People complaining about lack of atmosphere whilst not adding to it is rather ironic, and different to forcing your way into a political debate in Brussels.

That’s just a shit analogy.

Teams come to the lane knowing if they sit in play on the counter timewaste and get their experienced players to dictate to the ref they will get a no score draw or an away win.
Our attacking play in the last two games has been embarrassingly bad and let's be honest this has been the case for a while
But I look at the team and does it look like we've worked on this on the training ground ?does it fuck

Don't even get me started on .our set pieces

Because that’s what I said, is it? Stop talking shit fella. You made a crap analogy, don’t expand on the original point to justify yours.

Fair enough. So if a fan is sat in an area with 0 atmosphere and doesn’t sing on his/her own, they’re not entitled to observe that the atmosphere around them is pretty shit?

They aren’t entitled to complain about it, no.

I quite like the idea of an ironic rendition of the "Football in a library" song at home - crank up the volume with that one.
Be a lot better than that godawful "Wankers at the lane" chant.

Marvelous, 25,000 Unitedites turn up for the coldest game of the season when any sensible person would stay at home... and they're all getting criticised.

Funny isn't it. The people who get uppity about some criticising the team too easily, are often the ones who criticise 'our fans' very easily.

I undertand some of the gripes totally but it's the attitude that not only is this a recent behaviour, but also it's a significant proportion who boo and slag off.

A few are quick to knock the team, a few are quick to knock the fans. Not much difference in those two attitudes for me.

Yep. Rubbish. All 26k of us especially those of us who came from far away in horrendous conditions. The guy I sat with in the SS wasn't rubbish though, quite nice to enjoy a good football chat while watching the game. Sorry if we weren't loud enough though :D

I have had a brain wave.............

Maybe we should get some of those clapper things they had at Fulham?

HH:eek:

When this was brought up last season, people repeatedly said the lack of atmosphere was because “the fans are nervous”. Given this season the pressure has been well and truly off with zero improvement in atmosphere, we can probably put that excuse to bed. The derby game this season was the quietest derby I’ve been to.

We’re shite and we know we are!
