Our Championship fears.....

Top 6 finish - no fear. I'm not a betting man but with Wilder in charge and looking at the standard of football played this season I'm going to put money on us going straight through. Deadbat stuck his neck out to predict Millwall would win the League, Charlton would get automatic with them and we'd finish 6th and get beaten in the play-off final, with Fleetwood going down......... so if he can stick his neck that far out with his reputation on this forum then I can be a bit daft as well.

We just need to use one example. Iceland in Euro 2016.

Quality players are not better than a quality team.

Just a few of the many good quotes here

“Wilder looks like a bus driver. Classic lower league manager like Warnock, Evans etc, that will get found out.”

“the team is littered with failures at Championship level, such as Sharp, Fleck, Freeman, Moore, Lavery and Basham.”

“They now are talking of selling 25000 season tickets next season of averaging 30000 and going up
Talk about getting ahead of yourself to compete they would have to raise prices significantly wich wouldn't go down well so they'll probably keep them cheaper to try and outdo us and reduce the budget and have little or no money to spend on a squad that would need serious money spending on it just to survive”

“ They can't win regarding ticket receipts. They either keep giving em away and keep selling concessions to adults .Or they charge proper prices and no body turns up”

“Having seen them a couple of times, they are poo and that is not with blue tinted glasses on. League 1 this year is abysmal. Their fans can also stop taking moral high ground on ticket prices when they don't pay what they are supposed to”

“they have a bunch of cloggers, freebies and cast offs captained by a fat waste of space who failed with them on two previous occasions.”

“ Everybody likes to see teams working hard. And in League One that appears to be enough. In The Championship? You need more. Someone a page or two ago mentioned that hard work has been enough for Burton, but I think that's dismissive of their side. Burton work hard but they have a couple of capable players. They came to Hillsborough last week with an obvious game plan but they've taken other scalps as well at home by playing well, not just battling. Working hard isn't mutually exclusive from having quality either. I'm not convinced there are many players in the Championship who cover more ground than the likes of Bannan, Lee and Forrestieri have over the last 18 months. I get the impression United think they can turn up at Hillsborough and simply out battle and out run us. As sluggish as we've looked at times this season, that's a battle we are absolutely capable of rising to if that's all they've got. Sooner or later they've got to realise and accept that they need better players as well. I'm hoping it's about 10 games into the season before anyone clicks on. “

“Part of me is quite looking forward to the absolute tonkings the pigs are gonna get to be honest.”

“I honestly believe they will be in for such a huge shock. It seems Wilder has a knack for signing lower league grafters but that doesn't get you very far in this division. “

“Said it before but this scrubbers team would have been pushed to get into the play-offs in 2012. They're definitely not as good as Charlton, us, Huddersfield or they were back then. Nowhere near. “

"Their side this season would be completely taken apart by the side we were promoted from League One with at the time."

Thanks Roygbiv. Much appreciated.

One poster hits the nail on the head though when he says "How many different ways can we say they won't compete in the Championship? Sounds like some of us are trying to convince themselves by saying it over and over again"

Not about us but one genius on there, talking about attendances naturally, claims they average more than West Ham already and could better them with a bigger stadium. The Hammers average is, I believe 50k+

It seems SAG are keeping them from selling out as well. That's what the current lot will be telling their grandkids in forty years time.

When promotion is confirmed this summer is the time the powers that be need to put their money where their mouths are by backing Chris Wilder 100% and rewarding the loyal fans that have stood by them every step of the way.

Some of the stuff they come out with is laughable. It's like they think the championship is la Liga and that we'll be up against the likes of Messi and Sergio Ramos. Of course we're going to have to invest and recruit the right players but as everyone says, look at the likes of Preston, Brentford, Barnsley etc. They've not done too badly at all, nothing to fear apart from their lot stinking bramall lane up next season.

Should see what I do to actual people.

I have no idea but I still reckon "Think Liverpool" investment is wide of the mark.

Although we have a great team spirit, we will have to spend more than 500k on a player.

We won't be able to establish a firm foothold on the next level up without some firm investment. I don't think there is anyone expecting a playoff challenge next season if we go up, let alone anything smelling like top two. But to even become mid-table mediocrity we are needing some millions spent on well-sourced defenders and midfielders to augment and in some areas replace the current squad players we have. There are many teams up there who have been playing Championship football for several seasons now and some dropping from the top flight who will simply take our squad to bit, regardless of this current wave of confidence we find ourselves on. Wilder has proven himself to be something special, but managers who are and have been special for us have been undermined by depleting talent. Bassett, Spackman, Warnock ... okay, some have squandered but we need consistency and ability and people on here have already mentioned promises made. They need fulfilling. I'd hate to believe that the gathering bubble of optimism we now see at the Lane burst by Christmas this year because the deadline comes and goes without answer. We don't need galacticos, but we do need talent.

This particular gem stood out for me.

Is he having a laugh? Our team this year would pass their bunch of cloggers to death a bit like we did Bolton at home a few weeks ago.

No good at finding this sort of stuff out but i'm sure someone has posted their squad from that season on here before. Might be worth revisiting for a good laugh.

It's a brilliant piece of delusion. This team would make a mockery of that one.

If anyone is in any doubt about how incredible the Championship is and how our team of "cloggers, rejects and poor manager" will struggle then look at the thread in the "hidden section" on Owlstalk.

Worth signing up for the sight of people trying desperately to reassure each other and clearly failing. I've joined in preparation of next season possible "View From Wednesday" and had a great time looking at the 325 page thread on us
Oooooohhhh S24SU mega thread on the horizon. Canny wait for that!

Excellent work Roy. There's so many deluded points that I'd like to challenge but I just don't have the time. Fucking hilarious that lot.

I don't think we'll finish top 6 as I feel even mid table would be a fantastic achievement if I take my rose tinted specs off for a second. However I'd imagine we'll get good odds and it will be worth a few quid of mine just to have us down for a top 6 finish. Stranger things have happened but as I say I can't see it happening.
