Could the returning hero be the best ever free transfer signing for the Blades?

I can't think of a better received freebie who has the potential to do so much damage to opposition defences. Can anyone match him up with a better free transfer we have brought in?

Stuart McCall was the last decent free transfer I reckon. (I think)

Although striker wise not sure we have had a decent free transfer in recent times.

Good shout, wasn't he over the hill according to some as well?

There's no such thing as a 'free' transfer (after the player and his agent have had their cut).

Just as there's no such thing as a free lunch (apparently).

Chris Morgan in the summer of 2003, and Neil Shipperley in 2005 both came in as free transfers. Morgan ended up being a club stalwart, and Neil Shipperley was instrumental in getting us promoted.

i think morgs cost us £50k

I forget who has been a free transfer and who hasn't.

McCall seems to be the best shout so far though.

Its a "free" transfer in so much as it is called a "free" transfer. Clue is in the name.

On the free lunch thing, how else should I describe the 12" Dominos Pizza (1/2 spicy hot , 1/2 pepperoni thanks for asking) which has just been placed on my desk without my involvment in any aspect of the fiscal transaction which brought it here?

Rees
Wilder, Morgan, McGrath, Unsworth
Gillespie, Cowans, McCall, A.Quinn
Shipperley, Windass

Subs:- Bennett, Bromby, Ehiogu, Gannon, Liddell, Allison, Davison

(They were all free according to Soccerbase but may not be 100% accurate).

Technically the Kyles and Jags were free.

Not in the way you mean though Bladesway.

He could be, but he has much to prove. Its years later and he's done nowt inbetween. I just hope he can repay some of the faith we are showing in him...

Windass was a loan signing I believe. Could replace with Martin Smith maybe?

Started out on loan, but then was made permanent.

Certainly doesn't belong anywhere near a team made up of best free signings. Was Cresswell free?

Pizza good fortune?

Dont really want to piss on anybodys parade but are we in danger of building Beats up to something he cant match up to?

Agreed. Which is why I said could he be. The question is potentially rather than definitive. The excellent replies say that actually we haven't done badly with free transfers over the years. Although if anyone mentions Seck I might split a gasket :)

Think if he gets close to McGrath, McCall, Unsworth and a couple of others we will be saying its an exceptional piece of business. Heres hoping.
