And I always love those photos where you can see right to the back of the stand and individual people silhouetted at the top.

But it looks to me as if Hagan's shirt has been 'heavily' retouched*. While no other part of the photo has.

With my Kremlinologist's hat on, which I don't possess - but if I did, I'd wonder why the OTHER , dissident, United player who was cut out of the picture does NOT appear to be wearing the same colour sleeves ........... ?

* otherwise known as 'airbrushed' it was very common in football books and newspapers of this period.

I have seen two or three of Dennis Clareborough's photos and we wore these shirts. Why else would I say 1949 and 1950?

No, I'm not disputing it, - like most people who know you for your contributions here, I find your knowledge of the subject unimpeachable ..... I think the doctored photos of this era are funny though.

I can think of a couple of things that may have happened. Do you remember Boys' Books of Football Annuals etc. from the 50s .... they would have a few pages of colour plates which would be hand coloured .... I was wondering if this had happened, is the picture from somesuch book? Perhaps they left the image black & white bar the shirt which, was painted in red ??

and I apologise in advance for this ...... they also did daft things like painting in up-to-date colours onto an old photo .... my 'Mexico '70' album shows the entire Rumanian team in fictional attire ..... do you think it's possible that they found an old photo of Hagan, in a previous years plain white with red collared shirt (which I have seen from 1948) and decided to overpaint it and thus render it contemporary?

Yes I know what you mean. When I saw the photos Dennis showed to me in 1996 (I was living in Old Whittington then and it wasnt far to walk to his house) I was fascinated with the white shirts with red sleeves and I still have not seen these shirts in print. Eventually I found one in google images tonight although it dos look "painted". Your photo is the away shirt we wore in 1948

That looks a thing of beauty.

In fact, I wish we'd revive a "classic" away kit, like Bristol City have done (& like Birmingham did recently too).

Ahh, a favourite subject of mine.

A great idea Alfreton but unlikely to happen after the club's revival of a historic kit for the 125 year anniversary was hammered by many of our outraged supporters. One decent attempt at recognising the origins and history of The Blades was turned into a free for all against the club for having the cheek to change the home kit for one season.

Every June, July and August on this forum, the fashionistas give their verdicts on the club's latest kit offerings for the season ahead. This seasons away kit for example, showed some initiative and a refreshing change from the boring and common black kits of recent years, with the unveiling of a purple and white number which looked the business for once.

However, within hours, an outbreak of colour blindness broke out on the forum as many on here insisted that the shirt was blue and shouldn't be allowed near a Sheffield United player.

In view of the reaction from our fans that they risk each summer, the club must wonder why they bother sometimes. Sadly, although your suggestion is a great idea, I fear it may never happen.

Sure the photoshop experts will do it better....As a complete novice I have very roughly and very quickly colorized it for you to get the imagination working a bit.
Ee, things deze young'uns can do wi' all dis technical stuff! It's reyt clever! Personally I think"away" kits should only be used if there's a kit clash. It's just a load of money making twaddle to boost kit makers profits. We should play in red and white stripes unless there's a threat of the world ending!

This may not be too much to wish for . I saw West Broms away kit (Adidas) this week against West Ham and thought it looked great. Only problem is it’s probably too similar a colourway to our home shirts . Great kit though .
As ever UTB !

YES PLEASE!

Yeah a lovely shirt, as have been so many. Which is the problem really - unlike Bristol City or Birmingham, there just wouldn't be a single classic kit generally agreed upon.

My own top three would be the mid-70s white with red sashes going across, the early-80s yellow & clarety-brown stripes, & the mid-90s blue with lighter blue/turquoise sashes.

But really love that 40s/50s kit that Jimmy Hagan's wearing there - certainly never seen that before.

Yeah but why oh why do the club keep featuring blue or a purple shade of blue? I hate it. Blue is for Wednesday and wankers. United are a red team!

Heyup, I've found a classic example of what I was talking about ....... Jimmy Hagan playing for England, or is it the Blades?

Nah, it's in his son's garden having a knock about with the grandchildren. You can in the black and white one see his daughter in law has got the sheets and a bath towel out on the washing line. England/SUFC my arse. ;)

It was a belated half-hearted effort at reviving a historic kit, they revived it for the year after the 125th anniversary, with a crap sponsor that was cream rather than white and the badge in a different colour red to the rest of the shirt, and the players wearing it were useless. That kit would be looked on much more fondly if it had been used as a change kit, used in the right season and not been worn by Adkins' load of toss. I have the sponsorless version of it and it's a great shirt out of the context of its original season.

There was a time when every team who came to the Lane wore a yellow shirt. I agree should only be changed if there is a colour clash. Would laugh if pigs wore their IKEA shirts

Wow... it's a long time since I saw so many photos of my dear dad! Love this kit with the red sleeves and the socks just finish it off perfectly. I don't remember ever seeing this kit in red and white but then most of the pictures from that era were black & white.
