I remember Robson getting a great welcome before the 1st game. People were unhappy with the appointment but went with an open mind. As at every club, things went bad when results did, not the other way round.
I remember it as being a lukewarm reception after a very underwhelming pre-season. The plusses (at the time) were the signings of Hendrie and Beattie, and only one of those had any success.
As for results, especially given the general pessimism about his appointment, it doesn't help when you kick off with a dire 2-2 draw at home to Colchester, having just dropped out of the top flight by a goal.

Probably so, but the remit was to get back at the first attempt, whereby we would have had more cash now. Unfortunately, almost to a wo/man, we knew that promotion was a hell of a long way away as soon as his appointment was made.
