Orient - quick thoughts

If Porter shoots in that situation it might have been saved, blocked, gone in gone wide - who knows. What I do know is that he put it on a plate for Coady to score from a better position, which he subsequently did. More than a little harsh to suggest Porter should have done any differently.

Even more obvious having seen the highlights now - see attached.

At the end of the day, scoring is not something does very well apart from penalties. What he does do well is bring in other players. When we get the ball up to him we need our midfielders to run past him like this because his link up play is actually quite good.

More of the same please

An excellent day out on the pop, a gritty and determined performance at last from the team, and first class backing from start to finish from the supporters. One of the best away days for a good long while. Also, it's quite a while since a goal has been celebrated as mentally as that one was.

Couldn't agree more. Porter was a long way out and had three defenders to cope with. Was the perfect pass to Coady.
Didn't Orient show up our lack of pace in the first half or what? Batt look likes helluva player. Two super saves by Long to keep us in it.

Coady took that goal really well. It's so easy to miss those when you're waiting for the ball to come across your body.

It's music to my ears George Long has commanded his box and was more vocal.
If he consistently masters these points he's got a chance of making the grade.
If you've got a compitant keeper it instills confidence through the back four.
Love it if he stuffed the comments of the critics (me included) down their throats.

Indeed. I like the way he made as if to shoot the ball across the keeper to the keeper's right (which would have been the easier shot), and then, after the keeper committed himself, slotted it to his left.

I stand corrected. I thought Porter had a clear sight of goal and therefore that he should have shot to the keeper's left - allowing Coady to pick up any rebounds. As it actually was, the square pass was exactly the right decision.

Coady's finish was particularly composed too; an element of five a side to it.

diplomat I thought Baxter played OK but was close to playing very well. There were some lovely touches but too often he'd overhit the pass after doing the hard work.

bartman I might be harsh on Doyle but he's the team captain and a central midfielder. He made more ricks than any of the other three in the middle and his performance is encapsulated by the 3-on-none break that Mooney missed a sitter from: he does well to chase Batt back but then needlessly went to ground, allowing Batt to pick a pass to the completely unmarked Mooney.
I also think McMahon's booking was entirely deliberate as now Westlake has left we don't have any other out-and-out right backs with first team experience. It's therefore better for him to miss the cup game (I'd imagine that Coady will fill in) than a league game

If there was a plan to make a bookable offence (and there may well have been) I don't think he would have done it so early in the game.

Hill could play at right back, though Clough may think it'll be ok to make a couple of changes for a cup game and bring in either Hodder or Kennedy?

I think it was also great to see that three of our four midfielders made a contribution to the goal. Note McGinn's off the ball run (onto Baxter's through ball) then White got involved (funny lying header), and obviously Coady scored.

Despite our defensive approach that attack showed that we're willing to push forward when a good chance arises.
