Thought it was a decent performance throughout today. Only the second game I've watched this season - a complete contrast to the Yeovil game. We passed well throughout, had good patience, defended where we had to, and though we didn't create a great number of chances we had one moment of absolute quality to win it.

Quick player ratings...

Howard N/A - had about two touches of the ball before subbing off injured. DW says he's out for a month.

McMahon 6.5/10 - generally solid defensively, with perhaps one or two exceptions. Going fwd he gets into decent areas when he overlaps but is ponderous on the ball too often.

Williams 7/10 - not troubled in the slightest, and far less wasteful with the ball than he's been in games I've seen him in the past.

Hill 7.5/10 - while I think he's fine at left back, I was v worried he might be the weak link in the middle today. Far from it. There was one instance where he missed a header nearly leading to a goal, but other than that he was very good. Read the game extremely well, and distributed the ball well.

Maguire 8/10 - thought he was shaky at Yeovil, but he was superb today. Commanded the defence well, dealt with everything thrown at him.

Flynn 8.5/10 - thought he was superb. Am almost certain there will be fans giving him a 6 or less on the basis that he didn't take on his defender enough, but I thought he was the best player on the pitch. Worked the hardest, always made himself available, never wasted the ball, beat his player where he could, created chances - he did really well.

Doyle 7/10 - typical performance, really important to how we play.

McDonald 8/10 - central to most of what we did well again. Some sloppy moments where he lost possession, but really helped set what was a decent tempo today.

Gallagher 6/10 - disappointed again by him I'm afraid. In contrast to Flynn, really didn't get in the game for much of it, should have scored when set up well by Flynn's cut-back, and his set-piece delivery and crossing was extremely poor.

Kitson 8/10 - like Maguire, another that in contrast to the Yeovil game was excellent. Led the line well, linked up well with those around him. Worked hard - the goal coming as a result of his pressuring of the defence.

Blackman 7.5/10 - odd game. Didn't really look like it was happening for him - at around the hour mark I thought he should come off after giving away another free kick. Moments later, he scores a superb curler into the top corner and then looks v confident.

Subs:

Long 7/10 - very solid indeed, never looked troubled. He'd have an 8/10 had his amazing save counted - the ref had blown for the free kick on Williams, whose shirt had been ripped off.

Cressie/Porter N/A - not on long enough.

All in all, thoroughly encouraging. And 2 more points than we got here last year, against a supposedly better side.

Thankyou. Blackman seems full of confidence after hearing him on the radio. 5 goals so far is good.

Porter: 38 game 5 goals

Blackman: 12 games 5 goals

Says it all really.

Porter's another Cresswell for me. Honest lads but not great footballing wise, will get you the odd decent goal, but, generally a bit of a hit and miss. That's not slaggin either of at all. I appreciate their honesty and work rate for the club. I think DW uses them well in terms of what they have to offer the team.:)

5 goals? really? wow. doesnt seem that many. i guess we need someone else to start chipping in with the goals. we dont really have anybody who we can rely on to come on and get a goal. well kitson, but he pretty much needs to start. never really get the impression cofie, cressers or porter are going to come on and turn a game for us. we pretty much need to be winning before making substitutions.

Not sure why Blackman is low on confidence because 5 goals is good at present. The one thing I feel he needs to work on is his decision making, sometimes a pass would be better but you can't fault that in him today. To me he is not to dissimilar Ched in that respect before Danny turned him around

I also thought Hill and Maguire were excellent and i never had the same worries as last season in terms of conceding a late goal

an extremely positive post on such a cloudy day.
Have we lost somewhat today?no!
christ weve got no back up whatsover-help!!!!
When we lose poorly to someone without creating chances then the moaning can be just.
Otherwise enjoy the moment that we are in the top 3 unbeaten with a fit squad of players.
or are you just as sarcastic as me?

calm your coasters lol. im not moaning, i said on another thread its happy days. i was just thinking out loud. i didnt realise he'd scored 5. it doesnt feel like it. 5 is pretty good this early. at this rate he'd get about 20 goals, which is surprising seeing as i don't think he's properly got going yet. just saying our lack of goals obviously isn't down to him at all, whereas i thought we hadn't got the best from him yet.

Thought was a solid performance never looked like losing, they do seem to lack some creativity though which is probably due to a lack of wide players. But 3rd and unbeaten without really playing that impressively yet, nothing to sniff at, the good play will come though then we should be in a good position to build on. Also the support as ever away was brilliant, was good to see everyone before the game, heres to next time.

As much as its nice to see, why on earth was someone filming our fans when there was a footy match going on?????

A suspicious Mrs Crouchy. Case solved. That'll be £500 + vat please Sellster.

Loughboro must have been watching a different game to me. That or scoreline journalism!? Thought we were poor today. It was a shocking spectacle and purely dire game of football between two crap sides. Orient were truly awful and we really struggled to beat them. It took a moment of magic for United to win. That said, I thought we were solid defensively. Orient never looked like scoring. Other than Blackman's wonder strike and the Doyle chance (our only decent move all afternoon) the Blades rarely threatened. We were fairly comfortable, but I did not feel we deserved to win. We looked generally clueless in the final third and our distribution was shocking. It was similar to Yeovil and another smash and grab job in my opinion. A performance that Kevin Blackwell would have been proud of. All that said, if we keep grinding out these away wins in thi fashion for the rest of the season I will be happy.

I'm not going to pretend we created chance after chance. What I saw was a good performance, where we passed well, looked confident, defended well, and never looked threatened - that in spite of missing our first choice central defender and keeper.

A stark contrast to the Yeovil game in both style and performance. 'Smash and grab' is an unbelievable assessment - Orient deserved what they got, absolutely nothing.

I suspect you are looking for standards above what this division offers, We are in truth less crap than other teams would be a better way of assessing games

Orient and thoroughly rubbish, we can agree on that. I would be surprised if they stopped up this year.

I think we were lucky to win. Had Blackman's shot not gone in, I do not think we could have complained about the spoils being shared. We controlled the game, but did not work their keeper. There was the move where Doyle/Gallgher shot, after good work from Flynn, and the keeper saved. Other than that and the goal, I do not remember their keeper making a save. We were slightly better than at Yeovil, but only in that we looked more solid (though Yeovil are better than Orient and carried more threat). I thought there was way too much long ball stuff and in the final third we were pretty poor.

Tranmere are having one of those runs where everythings going for them , v Crawley , crawley just handed 3 on a plate with horrendous defending and their winner yesterday was deflected in by a county defender, once their luck runs out we will saunter through in our unpresuming methodical way

If you'd been at Tuesday's game you would not have been saying this was a shocking spectacle, I can assure you ! Now THAT was!

A shocking spectacle is a shocking spectacle. Just take two poor teams, mix in no real clear cut chances and no real quality, add a great dallop of hoof and garnish with not seeing more than 4 or 5 passes being strung together by either side. You've got yer sen a shocking spectacle.

You've been watching too much premier league football. I enjoyed yesterday's game, though we don't challenge the opposition goal keeper nearly enough. Gallagher's crosses were awful but we never really looked likely to lose and completely dominated the game. And considering Collins was a late injury and losing the keeper early in the game thought we did well. I LOVE watching United in the sunshine! Nothing better than a weekend in London for an away game when we win!

Oh contraire mucker. Rarely watch any premier league football. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed yesterday. It was nice having the sun on my face and our view from the 'upper tier' was good. I love watching United win and will take results/performances like that away from home for the rest of the season. It is promotion form when you do not play great and win. Completely dominating the game is a bit of an overstatement in my opinion. I think we coped with things well and were professional. We never looked like losing and that is a good sign. I also think that we have several attacking players that are very good for this division (Kitson, K Mac and Flynn ..... maybe also Blackman and Gallagher) and that bodes well.

you could just as well say they were winning last week 5 minutes into injury time and conceded with the last kick. if it wasnt for that "bad luck" theyd be even further clear. they have a goal difference of +20, nobody else in the league has a goal difference better than +7. hardly suggests theyve been lucky.

if we were top, 4 points clear and with a goal difference of +20, everybody would be saying weve won the league already!

Tranmere are flying, no doubt about that. Close to 3 goals a game, only conceded 6 and a plus 20 goal difference. This is not the sign of a team being lucky. It's the sign of a team that is red hot. Thye have the basis of a promotion team. They have 2 quality strikers and are pretty solid. That could be enough to get you out of this shite league. They have not played any of the 'bigger' teams, other than County, but I am not writing them off just yet. If they keep Apka Aprko, Cassidy and Robinson fit then they will be in with a chance. I do not know much about their defence, but they have the best defensive record in the league and hence are pretty damn solid. Charlton won the league by being rock solid last year and having just enough quality to nick the odd goal.
