I constantly struggle to login to the online ticket sales website. It always says it "the service is unavailable.

Sometimes try for hours on end trying to get logged in.

The reason you have this morning will have been the power cut, I think the ticket/customer management server is hosted locally within the ticket office.

I struggle to understand why I have to pay a £1 Web Sale penalty for saving them the effort of having to actually serve me.
Fucking liberty!

I was going to have that little moan after I bought mine today. It's still cheaper than the cost of travelling to the ticket office, but totally unjustified. I wonder if the IT provider get paid in commission via that fee.

Quite. Presumably, the decision to stop cash turnstiles meant an increase in the cost of operating the ticket office, more people to answer phones and serve people. That would have been covered by increased ticket costs (and they are disproportionately more expensive than inflation would allow) .Now presumably, the ticket office operates with fewer people, so there is no justification for an online premium, when the punter does all the work.

If you want to feel better about the charge, tell yourself it covers postage, assuming they are sending your tickets out.

I couldn't book for the JSS online (I'm an STH in the JSS) so I phoned the ticket office, explained that I was phoning them because there was no option to book on-line and they sorted out my seat - and they waived the £1 telephone booking charge.
