One major signing off having a decent team at this level.

No chance of promotion this year !! I was alluding to the fact that Mr Clough can assemble a team over the rest of the season to clamber out of the relegation dogfight and hopefully stabilise to give him the opportunity to form a cohesive unit to be in position to make a challenge next year for perhaps an automatic spot !
Settle down Fiery we'll be in mid table after we've beat Stevenage and Oldham

Some on here have very short memories - we are where we are in the league due to the intransigence of Weir and the dross he assembled as a squad - Weir has gone but the dregs are still at the club !
i think you must also have a short memory fiery.. it was ale house that signed two of our worst players.. doyle and collins
why would donaldson join us?? cos we're 'massive' :D.. actually training would be a cinch for him if i remember what he did to harry and collins last time

You mean the Clayton Donaldson that has played all 20 games this season for Brentford and scored 10 goals. The same Brentford that are 3rd in the league?

Why would he join us and why would they sell him?

Yes, the same Brentford who have been punching above their weight for two seasons and have just replaced an excellent manager with two stiffs. Their decline starts here.

Why would he join us? Well, without sounding all Wendy, we will always be a much bigger outfit than them, better stadium, bigger fan base and a chance of real progression.

Why would they sell him? Because, like us, if money is waved at any talent he'll be gone. They must be in debt. Apart from Shrewsbury at home (cheap tickets, att. 9,783) their crowds hover around the 6k mark. Apart from the Shrews game, their best attendance was against us (7,316). Even London derbies such as against top-of-the-table Orient only attracted 6,439.

Let's stop selling ourselves short. We've got a lot going on here.

I can only assume you didn't go yesterday. That's as bad as I have ever seen us play in the first half. We could barely string 2 passes together and we're not even good enough to lump it up front.

If we'd played a team that even vaguely tested us at the back, we'd have got battered.

I don't get to see us much, but I've seen us play worse than that several times this season.

Cov first half for a start.

Since Porter has returned from Chesterfield I think he,s done well and doing simply what the manager is asking off him.
I like many others on here have given him stick but you cant fault his attitude and application and he,s pretty good at what he does..

I'm desperate not to get hung on this point, but exactly what does Porter do?

I accept that he is the only player who can play any form of holding / big man role. But my word, he is so limited in this role it's untrue. It says everything about how far we've fallen that his performances have become acceptable....:(

He flicks it on and hold it up adequately, and gets the odd goal. Until we have a better option in that role, what do we do? Cheer him on is the only answer.

Do you think I don't cheer him on JD? I did on Saturday, and I did at Cambridge when he missed another sitter.

The message board is surely for different things. We can all agree (I think ) to get behind the team from the stands. It still doesn't alter my belief that if we are arguing that Chris Porter's performances are acceptable, then we are in the position we deserve to be in.

He's not good enough for where we need to be, but there's naff all we can do about it. That's for the club to sort out. And if they're as ambitious as they claim, then they will.

I could argue he's Pele reincarnate or the devil himself. It won't change much.

Why not pick up on the post that said "he does what he does pretty well" then? Seems as irrelevant as mine based on your logic.

Your worries will be over next Summer. He'll be gone and Doyle and Collins (contracts up unless I'm wrong?) with him.

We've always embraced mediocrity I'm afraid. Ten years of Montgomery speaks for itself. The good news is it's all going to change with HRH and Nigel. Good times and good football to come!

Because we can wallow in our failings or try to appreciate what we can. Your post had a definite air of "wallow" about it. :)

I'd suggest a post stating that Porter is "doing a great job" is wider off the mark than one saying we really must improve on him.

Your normality is clearly my cloud cuckoo land :)

A decent job within a very limited remit. Small mercies. :)

Doyle is under contract until 2015. Collins has a one year "option" but I'm not sure if it's our option or his.

Is he really? That's a shame. I can't help but think (and fervently hope) that he won't be playing first team football at SUFC for the final 12 months thereof. Same goes for Collins, though I'd be perfectly happy for him to remain as a "cover" player.

I think we are 2 signings and resigning Cody off being able to make a charge in the 2nd half of the season.

Don't worry Pinchy the new commercial partners already have Doyle, Flynn and Porter next to the car to drive off.

No need to pay us

Yes, they have chosen well, haven't they? Though Flynn is showing limited but welcome signs of redemption.

Addendum:

I like Coady and expect him to improve into quite a player. It would be nice to think HRH will help us to keep him, at least for next season. I trust our Nige to gradually integrate Cuvelier, Brandy and other players of talent (as he is doing with Baxter and maybe Murphy) into a very decent footballing team, with further recruitment of course, over the next 18 months or so. Patience will, however, be required!
