Like the long winter evenings, these international breaks just fly by. Anyway, here's the fascinating story of Ivor Broadis:

They don’t make them like Ivor Broadis any more... The remarkable life of England's oldest living international
  • Ivor Broadis is England’s oldest surviving international footballer at 95 years
  • Broadis earned 14 caps for the England senior team and scored eight goals
  • He represented England at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, scoring twice
  • He flew for the RAF during the Second World War and spent 45 years as reporter
Without Googling, who is Ivor playing for here?

You Googled! :D The clue in the Archibald Leitch stand in the background.

No, 'International Breaks' makes it justified in General Blades Chat. ;)

It was the Leitch Stand that gave it away, and the inkling that he plied his trade in the North East, and that looked like Rokers Leitch Stand.

I love a Leitch Stand, my favourite ones still standing is at Fratton Park, and i loved the ones at Villa Park and Roker Park. Not many still around but Plymouth have got a great one built to a Leitch design, and Hearts have just pulled theirs down.

Goodison, Rangers are fine examples as well.

And, I think one of his first projects was our John Street stand. However, the first pic. in the article I linked to in Post #5...

is captioned 'Leitch laid out the first incarnation of Highbury'. Surely it's Wolves' Molineaux?

Highbury did have a stand like that years ago and Arsenal had a kit in the style of the lighter shirts a few times.

Wolves and Arsenal both had stands like that they was uneconomical and difficult to repair. Wolves had theirs until the 70s when they ripped it down and built the two tiered cantilever stand. Arsenal pulled theirs down in the 30s and replaced it with one of the two Art Deco stands.

The bloke on the far left of the upper stand, front row, is Fred Blenkinsop. Born in Hendon in 1932. Wore a size 8 cap and smoked Capstan. Wife named Audrey.

Who needs Silent Blade

:)

We all do, because you didn't mention that Audrey's not sitting next to him because she was making the half time cups of tea that day, whereas Silent would have and it's crucial to the story.

Still pictures can be misleading, but I think the goalkeeping coach has work to do on the skill 'how to get your hands into position ready to catch a ball'.

Which is why I never mentioned Audrey going to the match, but now it's out in the open, Fred took Madge the barmaid from his local that day. Brassy cow showed him her ankle at half time. Then tossed him off during the second half.

See what you caused now Isaw Joeshaw ?
