I don’t know the answer I’m just asking the question.........

Q. What’s is the largest jump in league places over three seasons?

Q. Where would we have to finish to beat that clubs climb up the leagues?

On the 20th of August 2016 we were bottom of L1. That’s 62 places by my reckoning to where we are today, meteoric, is it a record? From memory can only imagine Bournemouth or Villa back in the 70’s ish being near.
 



Wolves' back to back promotions into mid table consolidation has to be close
 
Northampton went up the leagues and down again in the 60's.
 
When?? They didnt go from League One to Premier League in consecutive seasons. Sure they were in Championship for 3 or 4 years.

Good call SR, the question was how many places in 3 seasons to compare to our Lq, Champ, Champ to PL.

Notts Co had a quick rise from 1990-93
3rd in Div 3
4th in Div 2
21st in the top flight and relegated....so they failed in the top flight.

Wolves didn’t have a quick rise....they are famous for their fall from div 1 to div 4 in four consecutive years....then they quickly returned to div 2.

The most impressive rise is probably Swansea City from 75 to 82 but they only stayed in the top flight 2 consecutive years.
In 1975 Swansea finished 22nd in division 4 (one of the worse teams in what would be called league 2)
In 76 they finished 11th in division 4
In 77 they finished 5th in division 4
In 78 they finished 3rd in division 4 (gaining promotion)
In 79 they finished 3rd in division 3 (gaining promotion again)
In 80 they finished 12th in division 2
In 81 they finished 3rd in division 2 (gaining promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history)
In 82 they finished 6th in division 1 (incredible achievement)
but in 83 they finished 21st in the division and we relegated.

So it took them 7 seasons to transform from one of the worse teams in the English league to one of the best teams out of the 92.
 
Bournmouths recent rise was quite similar to ours

2013 they finished 2nd in league 1
2014 they finished 10th in the Championship
2015 they finished 1st in the Championship
2016 they finished 16th in the PL
2017 they finished 9th in the PL (this Is still their highest finish in their history)
 
Watford 1977-1983 is impressive:

1977 Division 4 7th
1978 Division 4 1st
1979 Division 3 2nd
1980 Division 2 18th
1980 Division 2 9th
1982 Division 2 2nd
1983 Division 1 2nd

Nobody has ever done 3 promotions back to back to the top flight. Swansea are fastest.
 



Norwich City arguably:
Bottom of L1 after the opening thrashing of 09/10, finished 1st
Next season: 2nd in championship
Next season: 12th in Prem

Swansea carried on with their downward spiral:

1984 relegated from Division 2
1985 20th in division 3 - stayed up on last day
1986 relegated from division 3
1987 12th in division 4

But Wolves in the 1980s has to be the best:

1980 6th in Division 1 and league cup winners
1981 18th in Division 1
1982 22nd in Division 1 - relegated
1983 2nd in Division 2 - promoted
1984 22nd in Division 1 - relegated
1985 22nd in Division 2 - relegated
1986 23rd in Division 3 - relegated
1987 4th in Division 4 - lost playoff final
1988 1st in Division 4 - promoted, and won what is now the Checkatrade Trophy
1989 1st in Division 3 - promoted

They then had a 14 tier stint in the second tier.

Relegated out of the First Division at the end of the 1965–66 season, this remains their only top-flight campaign, and two further relegations in the next three seasons saw them back in the fourth tier.
 
Can we include fewest goals conceded during these periods and how many OG were awarded just to make it a tad more complicated ;) UTB

I knew Swansea had summat to do with it! ;)

The thing I remember most about Swansea's rise and fall, was the culling of their manager John Toshack. For those Blades who have only fairly recently acquired pubic hair, I should point out that John Toshack was a bloody good footballer and played for Liverpool. He was Swansea's manager and took them all the way from 4th division to the 1st - and just when he thought he was about to become a managerial legend - they sacked him following two successive relegations. (The records will say he resigned, but I know a bloke who comes in the pub with a dog, and he told me he was sacked).

Arguably it'll be 4 seasons come the end of this one, not 3.
