Oliver Norwood

I’d like us to try Slater and Brunt rather than persist with Norwood/Hourihane and Fleck. I’d be delighted if they were better and totally gobsmacked if they were any worse.

And if Norwood doesn’t like it he can stop taking awful set pieces. Everyone in amateur football can avoid the first man on corners, for crying out loud.
Easy to use that lazy cliche to slate professional players.

A couple of things - I’ve played amateur football for 15 years, I can categorically state that not everyone can beat first man.

Secondly - Norwood is not alone in failing to beat the first man, referring specifically to corners (which I’m assuming you’re also talking about as its the classic set piece where ‘even a Sunday league player can beat the first man ffs’ - well here’s a stat, ‘according to a 2019 statistic based on corners taken in Europe’s top 5 leagues.... 40% failed to beat the first man’

An exaggeration on my part, fair enough, but I maintain that for someone entrusted with a lot of set pieces Norwood’s are poor. He does hit the first man far too often.

FWIW I was in goal on Monday night. The opposition had 10 corners. All beat the first man. This is not unusual. And I’ve been playing amateur adult football for 30 years, so there :)

With all due respect to Slater he’s nowhere near the level we need. Brunt might be one day but not at the moment and definitely not in the sitting role.

Im far from Norwood’s biggest fan but IMO he had a great first half Saturday and played pretty decent last night too when he came on. Similarly Fleck was decent at the weekend but last night not really at it, albeit he did win the penalty.

Would like to see Guedioura given his chance.

None of our defensive midfielders can defend. Surely it is not too much to ask for someone who can take the ball from the defence and pass it to a teammate but can also track runners and make tackles.
Got a spare 30 million to lend the club?

Fleck and Norwood have combined for 1 goal and zero assists so far.
It is not just the strikers fault.

Norwood plays a lot better in a 3
Fleck plays a lot better in a 3
Egan plays a lot better as part of a back 3
Basham is outstanding as a RCB in a back 3
Davies would be perfect as a LCB in a back 3
Bogle/Baldock are both genuine out and out wing backs and struggle as a conventional Full backs
Stevens/RND are both genuine out and out wing backs and struggle as a conventional full backs
Osborn would make a great defensive ball winning midfielder if he was complemented by a ball playing midfielder of two.

But obviously the smart suited guy in the dug out knows better
Aye
Wilder (& Knill) would have that team twenty points clear by now🤔

I would put Basham in the middle with either Fleck / Norwood until we are at a point where we can bring in some fresh faces . We Need someone in there with with a bit of height & can put a foot in where required.
Clearly your recollections of Bash in midfield are, at best hazy
Didn’t Lundstram have “a bit of height” & “put a foot in when required”

Have you’s considered recruiting better defenders ( (& keeper 😳)
😉

yes agree regarding defenders Davies and Egan doesn't work for me
for all his nice football Davies too lightweight and small
just hope were not paying his reputed £60 k per week Liverpool wages

I have been very critical of Norwood recently but he played quite well when he came on. Even made a few challenges. He needs a ball winner at the side of him. Fleck is a liability, constantly giving the ball away in key areas.

He was taking a throw in last night on South Stand side of the pitch and someone in the crowd shouted a load of abuse at him. When he’d taken his throw he turned round and gave the fella a proper mouthful back.

I remember that corner routine that worked for years, Colin Morris to Stancliffe to flick on. Cant we reprise that one?

Glad he did. What's happened to our fan base to turn them into such entitled twats that they aren't able to support players with our shirt on?

Sadly, I think Bash has pretty much gone and now too slow/clumsy to play CM. We need someone who can bite into a tackle.
I agree mate , but using what we’ve got in the meantime until hopefully the the owner will put his hand in his pocket in January. As sitwell said in the thread Guedioura probably another option in the interim .

I presume he's nowhere near good enough since he hasn't been involved. Given that Slav's first signing was basically a DM which fell though. I suspect Norwood would look a much better player next to a tough-tackling DM.

Norwood stresses me out and I have been hoping to see Hourihane and/or Guedioura have a decent change in few games in a row to shine. Last night wasn't decent or fair change, it wasn't even a fair nor decent game.

Excellent again, got MOTM but thought MGW was in front of him for that award tonight.
