Old big nose

Ah yes, apart from the 3 seasons under Bassett. Sorry, my big nose-tinted glasses must have led me to airbrush history

Don't worry, this threads full of it.

Neil increased the number of tea ladies and laundry staff as well I believe. Asked the club for a new teapot and a big chair for his office and a basket for Blackwell to lie in next to his desk.

He didn't go out and actually buy them himself though......

He was supposedly after Warnock and Nugent and possibly Murphy. But he spent almost three million plus wages on players for a later season, choosing not to strengthen at all for that season. They were his own words "for the future".

I find that odd. Well I don't actually, not at all. I was making a point. Feel free to telle how many times those reasonable signings pulled on a first team shirt.

Exactly my point about not being able to attract Premier League players for Championship wages.

Yes he did. He got Blackwell's basket from that pet shop near the Moor that kept snakes.

NW:- "To think when I took over it was 8,000 crowds and when I left it was 25,500 average".

Warnock is wrong and you are wrong.

He doesn't claim we were averaging 8,000, only that there were crowds of 8000.
We had one crowd of 8,965, so he's exaggerated that slightly.

However, he underestimates massively the average attendance when he left which was actually 30,512.
You were pouring scorn on his claim that he increased average attendances by 17,500 when in fact it was 18,022.

Crowds. Plural. Are you saying he was correct then about low gates but didn't have a clue about the other end of the scale.

No, that's why I clearly said he was wrong.

I've dealt with the rest. You've been deliberately selective. It's not a nice trait. The crowds fell for one season and one season only. 17 to 30 is still excellent but it's not 18000.

There is nothing selective about giving the average attendance on the day Warnock started and the day he finished.
That seems to me to be the traditional method of working out what difference he made to attendances.

If you want the difference between the season before he started and when he finished it was a mere 14,269 increase (30512-16243)

If I ever find myself discussing the minutiae of a Warnock interview could someone please remind me that I need to re-evaluate my life?

Yes he did. He got Blackwell's basket from that pet shop near the Moor that kept snakes.

You moved on on from Warnock interview minutiae to the exotic reptilian stock of Middleton's Pet Emporium on Cumberland Street.

I really think you need to re-evaluate your life.

A break, perhaps?

I've heard Indonesia is nice this time of year.....

I'd already admitted to 13.5k increase so I'm nearer than both of you. Ner ner ner. :)

He divides opinion. Always has, always will. He's done some good work since leaving us. No argument about that, to argue otherwise would be stupid and I haven't done that at all. Probably best to leave it now as it's been a reasonable discussion throughout the thread and I'd guess all points have been made.

It's clearly very very hot......

Neil has never ever exaggerated before then?

Of course he has. Who can forget the "even Real Madrid would have struggled to beat Gillingham today" quote. And I wouldn't put it past him to throw the 8k figure out again when he's interviewed after the game. But let's not exaggerate on the extent of the exaggeration.

Dear me. So why spend the money when he wasn't strengthening the squad? Which has been my point all along.

Two options available:-

1) Sign nobody at all because we only want proven Premiership players and they won't come to play under our Championship wage structure
2) Sign Championship/Foreign players with the potential to become Premiership players in the hope that some come good (e.g. Hulse, CKR, Stead).

Ironically I've turned down an invitation to a wedding in Jakarta next week.

I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the world but I'm in the top one, me.

I said probably best to leave it SB, but point 2. We were still near the relegation zone. We didn't need potential we needed cover. £2m for Shelton and £700k for Fathi didn't really give us that, as events proved.

Any way, decent discussion even if we disagree on most points!

I think that's more his comic timing. Anyway, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt now about his gates quote. That Botox seeping from his forehead to his brain could be the reason :)

I'm sure the bride to be will be in tears for a long time to come.

You really shouldn't have lead her on like that you know.
Which is what I expect I'll be saying to the groom in about a year's time.

Here's a question, how many times have we actually played against teams managed by him ?

Without checking, there's QPR since he left us, that embarrassing 0-3 which saw the end of his mate Kev, but I suspect there aren't many if any more ?
We beat Palace at the Lane.
What he actually deserved after promotion was the sack. KM has said so in terms since.

The hooter was out of its depth (and that's a very long way!) in the Prem as it always has been.

That's why him, he likes the Championship, him.
No he's a great manager him Pinchers. . Listen those lads.. Ah'm so proud of em still, it's unbelievable.

I hadn't read your "final" post when I posted mine ;)

Regarding the above, I would point out the difficulty that any manager would face in signing a quality striker as simply "cover" for Hulse.
Hulse wasn't injured at this point, so any striker we signed would either have to partner Hulse or be willing to sit on the bench.
I'd suggest that Stead was the best cover we could sign under those circumstances.

Shelton potentially offered a different set of qualities to anyone else in the squad.
He was actually exceptionally good against Man.U but couldn't recreate that on a consistent basis.

Also, I've heard many a manager try to take the pressure of new signings by saying they are "for the future".
That doesn't mean that they're not privately hoping and expecting that they will make the step up and contribute immediately.

Ok, that's it. We'll agree to disagree.

Jakarta?

No, we went on the bus.

(Come on Crab, help me out here)

Sorry I'm late, was delayed by all the norks on the Leonard thread.

Erm.................if it was horse-drawn would it have been Orson Jakarta? Sorry, short notice, not my best material!

I don't believe Real have ever beaten Gillingham. Tough away trip to be fair.

POLICE!

Tim Vine's funny joke book of "Funniest ever really funny puns" has been stolen....

So I told my mum that I'd opened a theatre. She said, "Are you having me on?" I said, "Well I'll give you an audition, but I'm not promising you anything.

Exit signs? They're on the way out!

Black Beauty? Now there's a dark horse!

Velcro? What a rip-off!

Crime in multi-storey car parks. That is wrong on so many different levels.

Eric Bristow asked me why I put superglue on one of his darts. I said you just can't let it go can you?

I saw this advert in a window that said: “Television for sale, £1, volume stuck on full.” I thought, “I can’t turn that down.”

I've just been on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I'll tell you what, never again

Yet again I come on a football forum to find comedians at work on total off topic areas. Sean Thornton never seems to be far away either
