Scunny at home....shocking decision not to give offside and they hit the post. Not saying they aren't shite on occasion, because there are plenty of blatantly obvious errors they make.
But I for one think the human side of the game should be left alone. No video reply....extra officials...goal line tech fine, but leave it there.
Instead, concentrate on making their role professional. Pay well, train then well and it will improve.
In my opinion the best move for football is to start properly protecting referees at all levels from amateur to professional. And I don't mean protecting them by not criticising mistakes, or even penalising them for the more egregious ones,
I mean protecting them in the way they are in sports like rugby where players wouldn't dare behave towards an official the way you can in football.
To become a referee you have to spend a significant portion of your spare time taking dog's abuse for no reason other than that you're allowing some twats to play the sport they love. Then, for reasons I can't grasp, people are shocked that the only people who make it to professional football matches are quite often aresholes. But who else would do it?
I've played a few sports and football is the only one where I moaned and complained to referees, because football was the only one you could get away with it. When the other team is pressuring him to give everything their way you feel the need to put similar from your side or I've played in matches where the ref caves because it's easier not to upset one team.
It's really hard for football to make the change now that it's so ingrained in the culture of the game but until it happens I don't see refereeing standards ever improving.
