I know Grafikhaus does a lot of detailed comparisons, but between a lot of beers with my brother I have been looking at the top 3, 5 years ago and this year.

Basically, 5 years ago Charlton had gone, and we were after second with the pigs.

After 33 games we were 5 points clear and they beat us by 3 points.

This year there is no Charlton - but both Scunny and the Trotters are ahead of where the pigs were 5 years ago.

Overall, therefore, not dissimilar from 5 years ago - this time we're top but there are 2 close on our heels rather than one.

So zips tights tight on trousers guys - Tufty on the reality monitor -and onwards to infinity and beyond.

If we do go up, there would be a small number of parallels with Charlton:
  • Hugely disappointing league position the immediate season before (Charlton 13th, Blades 11th)
  • Appointed fan favourite former full-backs as managers (Charlton Powell, Blades Wilder)
  • Bizarrely large recruitment into the club (Charlton 26, Blades 15)
  • Relegated from the Premier League 2006/07
  • Signed Leon Clarke, who barely made any impact (Charlton played 1(6) goals 0, Blades played 7(9) goals 1)

You've got to remember that after Wednesday beat us at Hillsborough they went on one of their best league runs in the history of the club.
