There have been many opportunities already this season to take advantage of opposion defensive clearances of crosses etc that have fallen invitingly on the D of their penalty box without having someone of ours there to fire it back. Everyone seems to follow the ball on the first wave of attack neglecting a good opportunity to score on a second attempt. This occurred several times against Huddersfield and again against Notts.

Doyle would be a good candidate for this role as he doesn't offer much in high ball attacks but can volley shots from outside of the box.

This is where we miss having an attacking midfielder like Quinny or Williamson. Gallagher would also be ok at this, but he tends to take the set pieces so can't really do it.

KMac wil fulfill this role in his sleep IF he ever feels confident enough in his team mates around him offering enough cover . He is atm playing ten to fifteen yards too deep to damage the opps as much as he should be doing.

Monty played this role for years, sitting deep and waiting for the ball to drop as you say, problem was that he had feet made of 1920's sand wedges and no composure.

I think KMac should be taking on this role, sitting deeper and picking up the lose balls.
