Not Good Enough

Given I didn't advocate selling anyone, what was the actual point you were tryng to make?

Slow as fuck we may be.....Sharp painfully so!

Done actually ain't that fast, over 5 yards he's nippy, but it's his speed of thought and knowing the exact moment to press that does the trick. Clarke ain't slow....Lavery is probably the quickest of the lot by a margin.

Pace ain't the be all. Pace when a side sits deep makes little difference attacking wise as there's nowhere to run into. More important is knowing how to move, run into space and get away from that defender and have a player able to spot that, hit the pass and find that player at the right moment, Also having the skill to beat a man would work better than pace alone.

Where we falter is moving the ball slowly. When we pass it very quickly we are dangerous. Duffy, Coutts and Fleck do it better than most when on it, and having the quality to cross a ball onto someone's head/foot consistently would be an improvement. But that could be costly.

I didn't say you were. I interpreted your post as saying that rather than Bolton strengthening their side, the danger would be in us depleting out side (as to be fair, we often have).

So, my particular issue is that the current squad (without potential losses) has proven itself perfectly adequate at reaching top of the league.

But I've also read your other response about the need for cover, and when I've sobered up to any degree, I'll give that more thought.

By the way, what are we doing debating this at this very time on New Year?? Have a good 2017 SBT.

You too mate. UTB

Not good enough and top of the league on new years day,i hope we are still not good enough and top of the league come May.

Wilder will make it so.

Happy New Year.

So exactly who,or what is or isn't?

Keeper. Check.

O'Connell. Check.
EEL. Check.
Wright. Check.

Freeman. Check.
Fleck. Check.
Coutts. Check.
Duffy. Check.
Lafferty. ?

Sharp. Check.
Done. ?

Clarke. ?
Lavery. ?
Scougall. Check.
Hussey. Meh.
Basham. Check.

Obviously these are my opinions.
I would make the following observations. We desperately lack speed of thought, movement and incisive attacking threat when either Freeman or Lafferty receive the ball wide. It either goes square or is recycled. Too many balls in are easily met by the first defender.
The midfield three need to support the strikers much faster and with intent.
Our goals for isn't bad,but we have conceeded more than our promotion rivals. That said,I like the way we set up at the back.
The second half of the season will be a searching examination and I would like to see the following additions.
A LWB. I am not impressed with Lafferty and Hussey is Wilders folly signing so far. Maybe Clarke will prove to be his second, maybe not.

A CM. Fleck is showing signs of dropping standards. Coutts and Duffy can't run 20 plus more games without a vigorous ratter. We need competent back up or equal to Fleck.

We need a settled CF pairing. If not Billy and Done then Billy and who? Lavery IMO deserves a start at Bury to stake his claim. I would bring Ched back as it's a no lose.

A solid CB. We will get an injury or two here as well as a suspension.

Beyond that I think we are pretty solid.
I also find it interesting Whiteman has been allowed to go on loan.
There isn' t much if anything from the academy we can utilise realistically right now. The next few months will either set our club on an upward curve where the sky is the limit or confirm us as Division 3 also rans.
January will be pivotal as to which of those paths we follow.
Brilliant SBT. Exactly my thoughts. Hope Chris and Knilly read this. Have a very happy 2017. Lincoln x

No they aren't theyll kick on as will Scunthorpe. They wont sell their assetts in January like we ALWAYS have.

Correct Sean, they'll realise that the escape hatch is whithin reach and push on, prepare for next season by paying a few quid now and cementing promotion..

Just like Wigan last season..

Edit, does expenditure in 2017 count toward the following seasons accounts ?

Maybe they might have a bigger budget if they're going shit or bust to get up and they succeed..

Good teams don't stand still, neither do good managers. If the right players, in the right positions are available at the right price - we should bring them in. Sheffield United's long term ambition is not to win League One, that's just from here to May. The transfer market is also a complicated business, and players don't always drop in your lap exactly when you desperately need to upgrade a specific position. You have to strengthen when it's feasible.
