I listened to the game on the radio. Couldn't bring myself to make the 300 mile round trip tonight. Not so much as twitch from the corpse that we now are. Stone cold dead.
In spite of all the anger and vitriol I and many others have spouted over the last few months (and rightly so) I listened with more sadness than anger tonight. What a sad, sad, sorry season this has been. In fact what a sad and sorry few years this has been since we were robbed of our Premiership status by cheats and lies and conspiracies from the footballing hierarchy. We should have proudly risen above it and purged the injustice on the football field. Instead we embarked upon a spree of such dazzling incompetence it still takes my breath away. Truly a crushing indictment of what happens when arrogance, ego and ineptitude are allowed to overtake common sense and good management.
Shame on you McCabe and the others on the Board for what you have done. Shame on you for your refusal to listen, for your patronising of the fans for your blind stupidity and mismanagement. Most of all shame on you for making me feel humiliated to be associated with a club that is now quite frankly a laughing stock.
So there will be be a darned sight fewer of us as we visit the the terraces of Dagenham and Yeovil next year. Just when we thought that particular nightmare was behind us. As a veteran of the Jones & Birchenall years and the Deane & Agana years I will still be there. I'll stand there with memories of 5-1 victories against Cardiff, 3-0 wins at Darlington, 5-2 defeats of Leicester and Peschi's goal against Forest. I will hang on to those to remind me why I am a Blade.
I hope Mr McCabe that you will also be a one of my memories as far as this club is concerned. An increasingly fading & distant memory.
