BREAKING: Sheffield United move in on Nosworthy
Published Date: 16 June 2010
SHEFFIELD United will ask Sunderland for permission to speak with Nyron Nosworthy, the Premier League club's defender, after requesting to be kept informed of his situation at the Stadium of Light.
As The Star reported this week, Nosworthy, who finished last season on loan with Kevin Blackwell's side, has been declared surplus to requirements by Steve Bruce.
But Bruce, Blackwell's counterpart in the North-East, is expected to demand that United meet his valuation of the former Gillingham centre-half before allowing him to open talks about a return to South Yorkshire.
Sources close to Sunderland confirm that United expressed an interest in signing Nosworthy soon after capturing Crystal Palace's Johannes Ertl.
However, despite telling the player he is free to move elsewhere, a fee has yet to be discussed with Bruce expected to demand between £500,000 and £1m after awarding Nosworthy a new contract last year.
Given United's determination to cut budgets at Bramall Lane following the loss of their FAPL parachute payments, that could prove a stumbling block.
But Trevor Birch, United's chief executive, is expected to try and broker a compromise in order to trigger Nosworthy's release.
Meanwhile, United remain confident of striking an agreement with Steve Simonsen after the Stoke City goalkeeper told officials at the Britannia Stadium that he wants to resurrect his partnership with Blackwell next term.
Another former loanee, Blackburn Rovers' Mark Bunn, has also been linked with a return but Simonsen continues to be United's preferred option following Paddy Kenny's move to Queens Park Rangers.
