Is there a better long diag passer currently in the prem than Oli Norwood?

Personally I would say probably not, in fact I would go as far as to say he's potentially the best aerial diag passer in the league since possibly Beckham?

He's always been touted as having premier league quality by the one and only Sir Alex Ferguson and its great that a worldwide audience now get to see it every week.

The way he plays the long passes, leaning back cutting under the ball and hitting the runner pinpoint in their stride give me flashbacks of Beckham on the odd occasion

Much has been made about our overlapping centrebacks, but realistically I dont think without a passer as good as Oli the system would even be half as successful.

Playing against his boyhood team this weekend and picking him to have an absolute blinder!

COYB!!!

Best long passer in the Prem? Technically not even the best long-passer in the team ;)

According to Whoscored:

Oli Norwood - 13.1 long passes attempted per 90 minutes, 59.5% completion of those passes
John "Lord" Lundstram - 6 long passes attempted per 90 minutes, 70% completion of those passes

I'm being tongue in cheek, just from watching games I think most would say Norwood attempts more difficult switch-of-play long passes, as well as it clearly being a big part of his role to attempt more long passes in addition to harder, line-breaking ones. But Lundstram is, in addition to everything else this season, a very good long passer too - I think he's just more selective / "safe" about when he chooses to do it.

Stop farting about arguing with the generally accepted view of the experts on here, and crack on with your pod.

I suppose it's that Roygbiv who's still in bed delaying things though?

We see about 10-15 per game from him and MOTD will show about 0-2 of these. That in itself suggests we don't see 100s of long balls from other players in the Prem

Yeah...you can prove anything with stats! 😜
Let’s say for arguments sake that Lunny hits four or five successful long passes per game (70% of 6 is 4.2). He’d still be hitting fewer successful long passes per game than Norwood with his 7 or 8 (59.5% of 13.1 is 7.79)
So who is really the best long passer, kids? They’re both great...You decide...😂😂😂

Lundstram has been the best long passer at the club since his arrival. His passes tend to be more incisive passes towards the forwards, whereas Norwood's are switches, or, - as you've rightly pointed out -diagnals in between the midfielder and opposition wingback/fullback. The diags from Norwood and long through balls attempted by Lunny have a higher degree of difficulty than a simple neutral switch of play.
Some of the players people are mentioning will get back a stats boost due to them being the set piece taker who often get a relatively unpressured situation to play a 'long pass'.I'd probably go along with your assessment of Norwood's diags as the best in the prem.

Long passes may work when you're in the premier league, but its the unseen work of Hammond which gets you there...

Oh wait.

Only De Bruyne and Pogba (very overhyped for other parts of his game mind, but an excellent passer of the ball) come to mind

We’ve got a fantastic team

Anyone who doesn’t think that is a idiot tbf 😁
I'm an idiot then.

I think he is a bit hit and miss.

At times he gives the ball away much too easily, and much too often yet other times he looks very good.

He has the ability to go from the sublime the to the ridiculous in 0.005 seconds and I can see why his previous two employers dispensed with his services when the were promoted to the Premier League.

So in summary, he has lots of talent, he's much too inconsistent, and I'm an idiot.

In answer to the OPs question, he's right up there with the best in the league. Rivalled probably only by the aforementioned Alexander-Arnold who is an absolute gem and future Liverpool and England captain in waiting.

Harry Maguire used to be a great long-passer for us but it doesn't seem to be part of his game any more - lets hope that BDTBL doesn't stir his memory on Sunday!

He is the definition of consistency but hey ho guess we will have to agree to disagree. I can only count his bad performances on one hand since he signed for us.

I've never heard Sir Alex Ferguson tout Oli Norwood as having Premier league qualilty, personally?

Who are you talking about - Norwood or Beckham? And if it's Beckham then what do you mean when you say "it's great that a worldwide audience now get to see it every week?" Beckham retired ages ago.

:tumbleweed:

OLIVER NORWOOD has never forgotten Sir Alex Ferguson’s parting words at Old Trafford.

“You’re not going to make it at Manchester United,” said the Scot as the Burnley-born midfielder moved to Huddersfield Town during the summer of 2012. “But I believe one day you will play in the Premier League.”

I’d agree.

So Hard to single players out but I’d say top performers so far have been
1 - Egan
2 - Lunny
3 - JOC/ Stevens

Not quite as consistent but just behind them and in no particular order,
Bash
Hendo
Baldock
Norwood
Fleck

Coming up on the rails
McG and Mousse

Under performing
McBurnie and Robinson

the rest haven’t had the chance to show enough

I was watching the Chelsea game, with one of their fans. He was absolutely cooing about Norwood, felt he had a better range of passing than anyone else in the game ( I don't remember if Jorghino played) and compared Norwood with watching Ray Wilkins in the 70s
