Norwegian youngster turns down Blades (U23s)

19 year old midfielder Kreshnik Krasniqi apparently rejected an offer from us to stay on at Strømsgodset. At 14 he was the youngest player to make his debut in the Norwegian second tier. Injuries have slowed down his progress a bit, but he's starting to get more playing time now in the top tier. He's got caps for Kosovo's U21 side.

I reckon he would have been a signing for Paul Heckingbottom's side at first. Maybe we'll keep an eye on him.

I reckon at 19 you are very much grown up enough for a move from Mummy's Herring and potato pie.

If he's hanging on for Manyoo or similar then GLTTL, but he's much more chance of a breakthrough here than the top 4.

Scared, badly advised or an ill Granny, it doesn't really matter.

As Carlton said, I reckon he feels he's about to break through to play regular top flight football here in Norway, while he would have been a U23 player with us. Jostein Flo said they've been having talks with us for some time, and another year on the player may feel a move abroad will be beneficial.

Didn’t recognise Jostein without his arm in plaster.
 
Can understand a footballer so young wanting to stay in his homeland and develop. If he is good enough his chance will come later down the line.
 
You can understand in the current climate that a young lad is probably a bit less open to moving countries. What with the pandemic and the fact no one knows what will happen with visas after Brexit.

Does anyone else remember United v Liverpool Boxing Day 1993 when Flo went through one v one, probably v Grobellar or David James, and he made a total mess of it passing to an offside player ? That's how I remember it, it doesn't sound bad but at he time I thought what are you doing and it'd have put us one nil up. In fairness to Flo, he scored away at Anfield in a very rare win there! Flo seemed to play better in the PL than he did in the Championship. For such a big unit he didn't use his strength as much as he could, but I don;t think he played in that role with Norway; seem to remember he played on the right wing?!

I've never heard him comment on his time with us, not like we've heard from Jan Aage and I wonder if he enjoyed it etc? Seem to remember him not playing much near the end because if he did we'd have had to pay more to his former club, Sogndal.

I think Jostein played his best football after returning to Norway, playing for Strømsgodset. He seemed tougher, more determined to use his strength and not allow defenders to bully him. He played on the right for Norway, but he was always a target man even in that position. His main task was to win headers, but it was felt he'd be marked by smaller defenders (left backs) and also be able to time his jump and direct his headers better if he received square balls, compared to straight balls.

I think he enjoyed his time with us, loved Harry, but I'm not sure his English is great. As I saw it, the sale of Deano was the start of a slow decline under Bassett. It didn't end before Jostein and Bassett left, and it's natural that people's memories of Flo are affected by that. In this period Flo (and Nilsen) enjoyed tremendous success with Norway, so it was a strange period for him. At the end of his United stay I think you'r right that we wanted to avoid an extra fee, but Flo also struggled with an injury, which we thought could end his career. Apparently Harry was surprised to see Jostein play on for several seasons after.

I do. Pretty sure it was Whitehouse who’d run beyond. We were by far the better team that day but couldn’t score.

I also remember thinking Whitehouse should have stayed onside, but would need to see it again to be sure....

Pleased I wasn't imagining it! I've looked back on the video from that season and but there's nothing on that game. I thought it may have been Glynn Hodges but you may well be right also with Whitehouse and, as you say, Whitehouse (or whoever it was) should have stayed onside also.

Thanks for your info there Bergen, wanted to ask you but no idea how to tag someone on here, never have! Didn't know re Flo's language side of things, but makes sense. In fairness to Flo he had to play alongside players who, sadly, just weren't good enough up front. A combination of Alan Cork, Bobby Davison and Adrian Littlejohn, occasionally Andy Scott. When we got Blake we looked a different team and I wish we'd not signed Wille Falconer and spent that money on another forward to partner Flo, but hindsight's a wonderful thing.

There was a store opening at Meadowhall early in the 1993-94 season. SUFC got Flo and Wirmola there with Beesley who was supposed to be the interpreter for when newspaper reporters were asking the questions. In the end Wirmola (who spoke good English) had to do the interpreting because the reporters struggled to understand Beesley's scouse accent.

Didn't Mark 'Guppy' Morris wear some sort of light cast? I thought I recall him having something that looked quite heavy after doing something to his arm or wrist.

Yeah I think if we'd signed Blake two months earlier in Jan rather than March we'd have stayed up. If I remember correctly when DB did sign Blake, at first he was reluctant to start him in games? Wasn't there reservations about his weight/fitness when he first arrived at the Lane.

I remember him bot starting much also at the beginning and it seemed odd because he looked better than what we had from day one and we were crying out for some pace, but maybe it was fitness and/or weight, or maybe Harry didn't want him thrust in straight away in the deep end.

Really liked Nathan Blake and it was sad to hear he doesn't look back on his spell with fondness because of alleged racist abuse when he played against us after. I actually looked into emailing him to say sorry if that was the case and he was considered a Blades favourite in his time with us, but there was no obvious way to contact him through Wales Online so I left it, but probably should have just emailed Wales online regardless.
