Since the squad is bloated to buggery already how about, rather than thinking of yet more bog standard possibilities, we ship out a good 25% of the players we have now in order to make room for someone who might actually improve the team?

We could currently put out two XIs who could manage OK in the Third Division but this club is Sheffield United, not Crawley or Chesterfield, and the fans deserve better than a team which is just about hanging on to a play-off slot. So please, let's not sign any more journeymen to add to the current crop. If a player is not good enough to fit into a promotion-winning squad, he shouldn't be stinking up the dressing room.

I agree with the theory here, the problem is that in practice we would trim the squad and either sign more shit or nobody at all, leaving us with a small, shit squad, rather than a large, shit squad.

As I say, I agree with your point. We've got some depth but no quality. Let's reverse this balance.

Also, if we trimmed, we would get rid of the half decent few and be left with those that are not even getting into the match day squad

I think rather than pay transfer money we should swap players we don't want for ones we do want. Not sure we can use Porter for swaps though.

Agree - we're still carrying too many players who will either be only used in emergencies or not at all under any circumstances (McGinn, Porter, Collins, Butler, Kennedy, Long, the last 2, whilst still young, are unfortunately unlikely to be good enough

Last summer was NC's chance to clear such players out and holding onto them simply reduces the resources that could be invested elsewhere. I'm still bewildered by Porter being offered another contract.
