You are a Derby sorry Rams fan aren't you ? Your obsession is beyond belief ,is it Clough or Derby ? 905 of your post are Derby related ,99 % Clough ,what will you find to slag off if we don't get a Clough/Derby connected manager ?

Full of bullshit anyway the poll was 2/1 Clough in not quite the 3/1 Clough out you and your other sheep would like to believe or have you just picked out the bits that suit you and ignore the rest like the other bollocks you have posted before ?
If you can't see that those comments are a resemblance of Clough then i do wonder what you've witnessed this season. I know you don't like Davie Blade but atleast respect his post on something that reads very interesting indeed regarding our ex manager and how he's gone about things with Derby and then us.

Sorry to pinch Roy's copyright but here's a view from the Rams forums:-

About time. Relegation fodder to play-offs in two seasons just isn't good enough.

They were relegation fodder in the same sense that Tottenham were before Redknapp took over there a few years back - tperformances/results were not a match for quality of squad or expenditure and they were bottom of the league (or thereabouts) but realistically there was no chance they were actually ever going to be relegated come the end of the season.

I remember Redknapp coming in and being praised for turning them around, making out that it was a miracle and he'd 'saved' them from a certain relegation battle - it was ridiculous!

Spent a lot of cash on our rejects and failed. Club that size expect more in that division, they aren't as apathetic as us.

Not surprised, considering the resources he's had for the third division he's failed miserably. Listening to some of the shef utd fans some of football he's severed up has been awful.

Spent a monster amount of money for that division and to not get promotion is a failure. Although it seems daft to spend all that money on so many new players to then sack him.

That said there fans were not happy, same complaints that we had about him

Clough bought all our best players! Get him back as scout, just don't let him near the training pitches!!!

Failed to get the biggest club in league 1 up.

League 2 at best but wouldn't be surprised to see him in the vanorama now!

but typical nigel.....he signs a centre half last summer and almost immediately bombs him out, then ends up with Alcock and McEveley in central defence for the play off decider.

I expect a shopping list of legzdins, steve davies and jamie ward might have been a step too far.

I have a few friends who are Blades.
Put it this way he'd make strange decisions (Ironic huh). Like losing a game and sticking a defender on, Putting a defender up front when drawing will not make a positive change ore negative then anything. Playing people out of position. I just laugh when he tells me most of the time I say 'Has Clough done.. yet' and he will be like yeah all the time!

Funny how he hasn't changed one bit I see him as a brilliant manager to save a club or if u want mid-table with the odd flirt (Yes like Sheff-Utd this season) with play offs. Couldn't see him getting any further then that.

Clough's just not the man to get your promoted. It's kind of strange, but some managers just specialise in specific roles. Grayson gets teams up from League One, Allardyce keeps teams up in the PL...

Clough consolidates teams. That's his forte. If he went to someone like Rotherham, he'd consolidate them as a midtable Championship team for years.

As Mostyn points out, it might be worth giving him that sort of job if that's your target and arguably your limit.

Clough leaving is the best thing to happen to Derby in the last 20 years.

From the outside it looks a bit harsh as they were in relegation trouble when he took over - since then he's consistently had them on play-off form. Yet, I'd bet that things look different from a Blade's perspective. He's had a lot of money to spend and I'd guess he's thrown away a lot of points through negative tactics. I could easily imagine their board thinking, 'this bloke will never quite get us up - and he's boring the fans silly in the process'.

If Fawaz has any sense (which all evidence refutes), then he'd get Nigel in this afternoon. With no transfer budget and a squad in need of complete over hall, Nigel is the man for them. He'd also get a little more patience from the inbreds.

Don't anybody dare suggest he comes back here!

He had them competing and a couple of great cup runs.
From the outside it looks like a harsh decision .
But if the football was not good I could see where it would happen.
Same old argument I guess results or entertainment .
In the end he didn't get enough results to justify the lack of entertainment or style maybe.

Would have thought he deserved at least another season.

If either excellent league results or entertaining style (or both) were targets, he failed.

They were never close to challenging for an automatic spot and they were really boring
by any standard. Signing five Derby rejects (McEveley, Freeman, Coutts, Ben Davies
and Steve Davies) suggests that he couldn't or wouldn't move on and try fresh ideas.

Clough lasted longer than any Blades' manager since Gary Speed but the prince who is
bankrolling the club apparently wants something more tangible for his money.

There's a poll on one Blades' forum where the vote is almost 3 to 1 for "Clough out"
so it seems that his management (with the same collection of pals and relatives that
he had at Derby) didn't convince many folk that there was better to come.

Biggest budget in League 1 apparently. 20 points off 2nd place. Shit tactics, negative boring football by all.accounts. That's why Mr Personality has got the sack.

I think Clough's record at Sheff Utd isn't too shabby. He took over when the club was in crisis, in the relegation zone and got them a 7th place finish in League 1 in his first season. He also got them to both an FA Cup semi final and a League Cup semi final and was voted the LMA's FA Cup Manager of the Year. Then he got them in to the play offs in his first full season in charge last season. His win rate is 47.12%, again not too bad at all.

Just like with us and SM, it will be interesting to see how the record of the new Manager they bring in compares to Clough Jnr..…

Win rate is great if you actually win something.

If he'd had 46 games, his first season would have produced 75 points.
This season they got 71 points, so progress towards promotion seemed to stall as at Derby.

The owner is rich and far enough away to ignore the fans.
Perhaps he and his staff didn't believe Clough would succeed?

I think our current owners have been quite patient, perhaps too patient with Clough
after the third season - we were just treading water after that.

Deja vu , Ground Hog Day , Uncanny , rolled into one , even if you were pro Clough at the time.

It tells us we actually made the wrong shout , which we now know to our cost.

UTB

Some of them have nailed it, others talk about how he saved us. But it wasn't hard if you look at the squad David wier created and the additions clough made we had 0 chance of relegation.

Clough consolidates teams. That's his forte. If he went to someone like Rotherham, he'd consolidate them as a midtable Championship team for years.
I honestly believe that if we got promotion, Clough would have kept us up, as this chap says he consolidates teams.
If he'd had 46 games, his first season would have produced 75 points.
This season they got 71 points, so progress towards promotion seemed to stall as at Derby.
Them two quotes I think are most interesting,

Hello Blades fans, Derby fan here (in peace, etc etc). Just thought I’d add my tupence on Cloughie – hope I’ve put this in the right place on the forum!

The first thing to say is that he, like any other manager, divided opinion. There were those who believed Clough was performing some sort of minor miracle by steering the club towards mid-table stability, whilst others have been slightly more sceptical of some of his footballing decisions. Some simply never got over the fact we pinched non-League Nigel from non-League football. Almost everyone agreed the board had got it wrong though – either by appointing Clough in the first place, or by not giving him sufficient funds to work with.

I guess the first thing you’ll be wanting to know, is what kind of football does he play? His footballing philosophy is essentially to keep the ball on the ground doing the work, and to press hard to get it back if it’s lost. Which is great – when it works. Too often we were caught out by a lack of a plan B from Clough, and he almost never made a substation before the 70th minute. We also saw outrageous levels of negativity when holding on to a lead, especially away from home. A master tactician he most certainly is not.

So what about transfers? He was a lot more hit than miss, which was pretty impressive given where we got our players from. I’m all for scouting the lower leagues and Scotland, but that was as far as his scouting network ever went, which I’m sure made the job much more difficult than it needed to be. But there’s a hell of a lot of positivity to mention in this field. You’ve got players like Brayford, Bryson, Buxton, Russell and Moxey who he’s brought into the Championship for under a million pounds (some of those names even came in for peanuts). When he’s paid seven figure sums it’s also gone well, with the possible exception of Sammon, who’s yet to really make his price tag seem worth it.

We did miss out on a lot of targets though. He point blank refused to have a Director of Football, and his brother Simon was our head scout. The way we went about our transfers felt a bit…amateurish. If you don’t ask, you don’t get – but with Clough’s management team, we asked and too often we didn’t get, and it really held us back. It’s one of the things the board were allegedly growing tired of. Immediately, Steve McLaren has come in and managed to spend some available cash on fairly decent loan signings. Clough was also very frugal with money and it’s said that he didn’t spend some of his available cash as he wanted a small-close knit squad of 20 players.

So what of his coaching and man-management? In some regards, his coaching was excellent. He’s turned over half a dozen Academy players into serious first-team Championship material – although in the case of Will Hughes, I’m not sure he can really take much credit other than for keeping his feet on the ground. You could argue though that he’s been burned out by playing too much football. He also turned Jake Buxton (a name you’ve been linked with both on here and on Derby forums) from a centre back that Macclesfield didn’t want to keep into a solid, consistent Championship defender.

For Clough supporters, this was the kind of thing they often cited in his favour…it was one of the few parts of his tenure that resembled the work of his father. On the other hand, several players didn’t develop as you might expect, such as Frank Fielding who if anything went backwards after we signed him. But then again, if you pay peanuts, you’re going to get the occasional monkey.

Players always played for him and you could never accuse them of not trying, which could be very depressing when we were outclassed by poor opposition. But I have to say, from the point of view of a fan, he wasn’t really an inspiring leader. He never really got animated during the match and his post-match interviewed very rarely contained a sentence of interest. By the end, the passion had been lost by the fans – Pride Park was a dull place to watch a game of football at, and away attendances were very low.

The reason why I’ve written so much is that we’re all in a very reflective mood at Derby. A lot of people have found it difficult to come to terms with the fact Clough never got to see out what he started – but it was just taking way, way too long, and deep down I always had doubts whether he really could take us much further. If I was to sum up his reign in one word, it would be “dull”. At first, it was what we needed after being announced as the worst team in 125 years of football as we needed the steady the ship, but the reality is that his name kept him in the job.

Which makes me think – is this really what Sheffield United needs? You need someone with passion to make this promotion happen, and happen now. Not in five years. Right now. Your fans have high expectations and you’ve got money. It’s not exactly the perfect job description for the man who’s only ever worked under an atmosphere of patience, on a limited budget, with very low expectations.

This is a bad move for both parties in my eyes. But if he is your new man, I’d be happy to be proved wrong. Because although he could be a bit stubborn and often cut off his nose to spite his face, he is a principled man who understands what the fans want and won’t accept anything less than 100 per cent from his players.

Good luck for the season in any instance - I've never been to Bramall Lane, and I'd like to make the trip soon...

Hi Rampage,

How are things with you. I am doing some research for a project and came acroos your helpful posts all that time ago.

The Clough era with us ran it's course, then Adkins and now Chris Wilder who has performed miracles.

How do you see us now? What was your opinion on Lampard? What are your chances this season? Which of your players should I put in Fantasy Football as well as Marriott?

Best wishes,
Woodwardfan.
