With all of us keen to find out more about what Nigel Adkins will do for us James Shield is trying his best, though I think all comments are showing that he doesn't know too much about the squad he's inherited and how he can make them play.


An "insight into Nigel Adkins' football philosophy" hardly tells anything about Nigel Adkins' football philosophy, apart from "calmness, comfort and confidence." What style is that?

It's a bit refreshing to see him talk about entertainment, as Clough didn't seem too focused on that. Bug again he doesn't say much about how his team is going to entertain.

Dean Wilkins has pointed out that we may not always entertain, they can win ugly as well.

Maybe the most detailed thing I've seen him mention is that set pieces are key, with him even quoting a stat. Probably a good change from Clough who was almost negligent about them.

Well, we'll learn a bit more when the friendlies start I guess.

I get the impression he's fairly flexible tactically and he seems to be one of those who looks to set a team up to suit the players he's got rather than shoehorning players into a preferred system, gradually replacing them with more suitable players.

I don't know about you guys but I get a feeling he hasn't really "connected" yet - with club or fans. There's a bit of deja vu to me with Robson when he first landed... I'm waiting for him to call us "Sheffield" by accident.....
Still early obviously, just hope he begins to communicate continuously and doesn't take a "nose out, Nigel knows best" approach.

Suspect we will be a) defending higher up the pitch/pressing etc, b) more of an attacking mentality generally/less caution, and c) pragmatic - adjusting to opposition. But don't really know.

Can't wait to see what he and his team begins to deliver!

Whatever his philosophy is it certainly can't be as slow and ponderous as it was at times last season so lets just look forward to it eagerly in anticipation that the Blades are finally, yes finally, on the up.

I don't really understand your first paragraph. NA has been at pains to stress the importance of the fans and his "United Together" mantra has already caught on. I'm not sure what more you expect of him in the close season when nothing is happening? An open top bus ride around the city, holding his scarf aloft?

As for "Sheffield", crowd favourite and footballing buffoon "Koz" did it all the time without any diminution in his inexplicable popularity.

More importantly, I think we know all we need to know about our manager's footballing philosophy, don't we? He's been around long enough and we've seen his brilliant Southampton team sweep all before them. The great news is that "Kick it Long; Kick it Hard; Kick it High" is not going to feature prominently, much to the chagrin of some...

Thank god it won't be.

His overall philosophy is attacking football. His sides have invariably scored lots of goals. OK the Scunny side that got relegated from the Championship didn't score many and Reading were a bit short at times but bags of goals in the rest of the seasons he's managed.

I'm optimistic for the first time in ages.

Get stuck in Positive and we'll get behind the team.

A real chance for the club to become United.
