Just thinking as Morgan nears the end of his career, we will soon be needing a new captain.

When we drop this season, why not give Morgan more of a broad remit as Player-Coach, and give the club Captaincy to Monty.

He is a vastly experienced, and hard working professional who always puts in a shift, he has been loyal to the club, has got experience of coming through as a youngster at Bramall Lane, and i think that his input could get us moving in the right direction next season as we blood a lot of the youngsters and blend it all in to a mix of fast-paced, direct winning football under Micky Adams.

This has to be a piss take?

Why is it a piss take. At the minute Monty is probably the best midfielder at the club, and maybe even the best player at the club. Why does it take the piss to make him the focal point of rebuilding the club.

Think that decision will be down to Simon Grayson................

If we go down there's no way Monty will stick around IMO. If Leeds come knocking, then, i think he'll go, and, i can't say i blame him. He's been a brilliant servant to us and being near 30 i'd imagine he wouldn't want to drop down to league 1.

Is that to go with his other title of Sir?

A captain should lead by example and Monty does what every player on the pitch should be doing, giving 100%.

For once I'm simply lost for words! Actually, I can manage two or three:

We  Hoofing!

As much as I dislike Monty, I do think Brownie has a point here in all fairness. For all his flaws, he gives 100% week in week out, and that sets an example to build from, and if the other 10 on the pitch see the leader doing that, then you would imagine they would follow his lead and do the same.

Personally, I think he will be gone before next season begins anyway, which then makes me wonder just who the hell will skipper the side, Squinny?

Couldn't agree more, I think those who say Monty will be off to dirty Leeds as quick as possible are naive, the lad is practically a blade through and through.
I get annoyed with the constant berating he gets for the missed passes, everyone know his limitations but you won't find a harder working player on the pitch and would question anybody to come up with another player who has worked constantly with the same effort and ethic that he has this season and the many more before?

Norfolk,

You want the whole team: Controlling the ball as though it's a spring-loaded jelly? Passing it like a hand-grenade? Shooting in such a way as to endanger low-flying aircraft? Giving more penalties and free-kicks than the ref? Chasing more shadows than Cliff Richard?

It sure makes for an interesting season ahead!

As much as I like Monty and admire his commitment to the cause, his workrate and his undoubted passion for the club, I'm not entirely sure he's enough of a talker to be the full time captain. I get the feeling he's a little quiet and unassuming for that job.

He's always going to be in consideration because of his time at the club and the good example he sets in terms of attitude and application. But is he a Morgan type character?

I dunno, him and Morgs seem close and he undoubtedly has the right attitude, but I dunno if I could ever see him bollocking people the way I can imagine Morgs.

Then again, who else in our current squad could?

Morgs is certainty nailed on for a coaching role though.

You seriously think a side with the ambitions of Leeds will take Monty and make him one of their highest earners? Maybe so, but I think they'll see what he is - a pathetic footballer.

If I actually wanted to watch what he does I'd go and see a marathon, rugby, headless chickens, triathlon, Grecko/Russian wrestling or whatever it is, weightlifting - anything but football.

But you're going to pay for a season ticket in order to watch him and fund him at the same time. Love it :D

Jesus, what a joke.

Monty, the highest paid earner in the 3rd tier, takes on the captaincy. He's been doing a great job this season in Morgans absence hasn't he? The guy is a plodder, clogger and his time is up at the Lane. He epitomises what is wrong with the club (all heart and no skill) and needs to be shifted. The guy will be earning 10-15k a week and that is not sustainable in League One. Plus, if we are going to pay high wages, then you want someone who adds a lot of value. Someone with skill, pace, creativity or a goal scoirng instinct. Monty is a workhorse, but that is as far as it goes.

His time is up. We should be looking to get rid of over the hill, never been players on big contracts and start again. Going down to the 3rd tier offers a chance for a fresh start and a clear out. Monty should be first on the list (along with Cresswell). Making him captain is ludicrous.

"The lad" was born and bred in Leeds and is a Leeds fan through and through. I am a great admirer of his loyalty and his commitment but I will be amazed if he is still here next season.

I expect Morgs will be at the club at least another couple of years yet. Despite his recent injury he still performs to a reasonably good level (hopefully that will continue) and keeps himself fit. I dont see anyone succeeding him as captain for a good while yet and Monty will probably move on at the end of this season.

Do the Monty-knockers think he will be a Championship player next season (with or without us)? This long and growing list of players (deemed not good enough for us but plying their trade higher up the league tables than us) excruciatingly painful to read. I think THAT is what's wrong with "our" club; this up-our-own-arse attitude. Charlie Big Potatoes, the lot of us.

I don't want to have a go at Monty as he will never deserve it. I would like to say that going down to the third tier of football gives us the chance to make big footballing changes. I don't think Monty can be counted a clogger but he certainly can't be considered a footballer.

I know alot of you think this is is the worst side you have ever seen but let's not go overboard. With a bit more luck injury wise, an injection of pace and youth and we have the opportunity to come back bigger and better.

Simonsen, Long, Lowton, Taylor, Morgan, Ertl, Maguire, Quinn, Williamson, Harriott, Henderson, Evans(?), Slew, Boggy

Possibles

Chappell, James, McAllister, 2 Norweigen lads, irish right back, Philliskirk who might be out of contract at Chelsea.

Ditch,

Collins, Doyle, Yeates, Cresswell, Aksala, France to add to the loans already gone and Calve, Jordan and Wright

We need a strong squad of 16-18 players and the rest supplemented by youth and we have a good team.

Just need to recover from this car crash of a season

Totally agree with the proposal but how do you 'ditch' Collins, Doyle and Cresswell? There is not a cat in hells chance they will want to leave given the relatively lucrative contracts they are on.

All we can do is circulate their names as "available for transfer" to other clubs and hope someone offers them a contract.
Can't see this happening as they are mainly Micky's signings. If they have owt about them they will want to help the club and leave anyway, but we all know football is full of mercenaries.

Are you seriosuly suggesting we should bust the bank to keep a very average player at the Lane next year??? After all the problems we have had with unsustainable wages and now you suggest that we keep a double figure earner at the club. 500k a year (probably around a tenth of the money we can spend on wages for the whole squad) for someone who is a defensive midfielder, scores once in a blue moon, can't pass, can't control and gives away a tireless number of fouls.

Monty does a job. I'll give you that. He breaks up opposition attacks well (though does nothig with the ball) and gives hundred percent. He will work damn hard (usually chasing shadows) and run hi socks off. Fair enough. Enough for him to be our biggest earner in the 3rd tier? Hell no.

We need a fresh start. There are plenty of defensive midfielders out there who can do what he does (and some can even pass). Geez, even Doyle could do that job in League One (he did it with Leeds).

I'll put the poldder, carthorse and clogger comments aside (my opinion) but god, paying him a small fortune to break up opposition attacks (then break up our attacks) in League One. Making him captain is ludicrous. You only have to look at his record as captain this year. We cannot afford to be paying average players big money, never mind giving them the arm band.

For what it is worth I think that Morgs will come back for next year. We should be looking for him and Lowton to be playing CB and building a partnership together.

Crikey, Olle. That's a big stretch, even for you! Where did I state we should bust the bank to keep him? My point was (and I thought it was quite clear!) that there seems to be a big number of United fans who are quick to label players who go on to do well at clubs higher up than us as "not good enough". We're going down and people are talking about Monty not being good enough but it also seems there's an acceptance he will leave in the summer (maybe for Leeds). I was just checking if the Monty-knockers thought he'd get another Championship club (even if not Leeds) as if so, his name can be added to that godforsaken list.

Keeping a player like Monty on 10k a week in the 1st division is breaking the bank. This could be our 2nd chance (after SOD) to change how the club thinks in the last 6 months. I like Monty but we shouldn't need that type of player in the 1st division.
