Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is making a £400,000 bid for Sheffield United's experienced midfielder Nick Montgomery.

The 27-year-old, who is celebrating his ninth anniversary at Bramall Lane today, still has a year of his contract left - with the club taking up an option that stopped him quitting for nothing.

But he may not be in Kevin Blackwell's long-term plans.

He had to be our most improved player last season, yes he did struggle at first but was one of a few who could hold their heads up after the last game. We need players like Monty, loyal and committed

We seem to be going for mostly midfielders this season. So could there be a complete over haul of the midfield with Monty no longer viable?

Monty is a key player this season and Blackwell knows it. Its fine having attacking types but you also need a solid stopper in there and their is no finer than monty in the CC

Given his end of year performance and starting role it would be hard to imagine his leaving at this point.
