Tedious to repeat a response but since you seem to have missed it:
My point was more that we hadn't succumbed to the first Premiership team that waved their chequebook.

Well I'm all for that. I don't think any team has waved anything, however.

If Brooks is thought to be in our best XI by the man who picks the team, that's fine. If not, he doesn't play, simple as that. No room for Sunday League thinking in professional football.

I agree. And if he did manage to get in the team he could be as the title of this thread suggests.

Leon Clarke, when he reached his fitness and showed the right attitude was class. The Wilder touch worked eventually. I'm with Pinchy, did I really say that?? Watch this space.

Stevens looks like he could be a cracking player for us. Very excited to see him in the red and white.

That said, I'd love nothing more than for Lavery to bang in a 90th minute winner in front of the kop at the sty in September, then give it both barrels to the deluded masses. Not normally a fan of such things but I want to see him looking up at the devastated delusionals, kissing the badge and pounding his chest Wilder-style. That would be glorious.
Clarke to bang in the second and doing the same would really rub it in!

I think some people will be surprised by how well Basham steps up. Quite a few have often said he wasn't good enough for us in League 1 but for me, he's always been a valuable member of the team. He strikes me as one of those players who can do a job for a team at just about any level. Very good athlete, big, and, for a defender, good on the ball. If we stick with the 352 with Bash on the right, I think he will step up seamlessly.

Obviously most fancy Fleck and JOC to do well.

I'd love you to be right but sadly I think he is a bit too error prone. He had a great season last year and I loved watching him surge forward and the Cruyff turns, but he gets easily caught out of position and occasionally loses the ball in dangerous places. With JW at the side of him keeping him in control he might be ok, but in a back 3 with JOC and say EEL, I think he will come a cropper once too often.

I'd love to be wrong on this one.

Do we have to have EEL back? I think that will be a disaster if we do. I like JOC - play him in the centre (not left side) as the main centre half. And use Stevens as left back and Baldock or Freeman as right back, assuming we are going for 3 at the back. I think Basham is a good player to have in terms of utility. He can be a makeshift defender or midfielder. He puts a lot into it I'll certainly give him that, but he is also a bit limited as you say. Not a great one for picking a pass when playing in midfield and can get pulled all over the place when in defence.

Not much love for the most proven of our championship strikers.

You know, the top scorer in the country last season !

Oh and Baldock was impressive when I've seen him.

For me, next season's surprising player at the Lane would be David Brooks.
The club would be showing some intent for the future.

For me, this is the obvious candidate. Brooks needs game time and the original plan was to loan him out to get this. The fact that he's been recalled means that he's going to figure in the team, otherwise what was the point of recalling him. To play in the U21's? I don't think so. The only other alternative is that we're selling him. Next couple of weeks should be interesting.

Could Jake surprise us yet again and step up to championship level? A few are writing him off already but who knows. He's as cool as a cucumber with not a panic in him. A big step up for him but also for a few others in the squad. A big ask but i think he'll do it.
Agree re Jake, last year he was immense, you could hear him on the pitch, call players, indicating where to cover and when he needed to, come out to clean up, and I mean clean up, everything, ball, player, anyone in his way, and totally clean. How can he not have been higher than than league 1.

I agree that with EEL there instead of JW he's nowhere near as good. In this system, it's vital that we have a real organiser like JW or a better version of JW in that sweeper role. Bash and EEL are both very capable of playing the RCB role but for me, neither is any good as the sweeper and they would combine to allow the opposition to score (think Walsall at home). With JW as the sweeper allowing Basham to play a position that I think suits him perfectly, I really fancy him to make the step up quite convincingly.

I hope it's Duffy. Think we did our most attractive work when he was on song and enough people seem to have written him off for it to be a bit of a surprise if he is as good as last season.

Couple of things at play here Dronners.
I wouldn't have him in this thread because it wouldn't be a surprise if he still banged in the goals BUT there are others who simply see him as too Bladey Blade to be appreciated and so they won't have him either!.

How brilliant would it be if Brooks, Whiteman and Lavery were all regulars in the team after January and having a big impact.

Just imagine how much money we could make next summer.

Would like to see Clarke continue his form after he got over his injuries. Just because he's ex fowl. Add Lavery as well.

Feeling somewhat vindicated with the Basham call but we probably should have said "all of them". So many have stepped up excellently
