im usually one of the most confident blades but after yesterday i think the play off are out of our reqch this season now and we will have to wait till next season for a promotion push hope im wrong tho.

There are enough games left for us to be able to reach the play offs. Let's see who is out and in during the JTW
Not having seen a game, I may be unqualified to offer an opinion, but it seems to me that optimism rises and falls on the strength of the last result. This trait is not unique to posters on this Board. There are several instances of teams picking themselves up, going on a run and being promoted, recovering from our current position.

Pretty depressing to to think that the absolute earliest we'll be able to play Championship football again will be in August 2015.

Bloody hell! I Thought I was optimistic. Any hopes of promotion disappeared a while ago, before Clough arrived.

Automatics are far beyond our reach and play offs are an impossible dream. I doubt very much if we'll get close to 6th anyway. It's been a hard season so far but it's a long season and it's not really going to get much easier

We need to concentrate on bloody staying up first.

Amazes me how many people are eying up the Play Offs still. First up, 50+ points. Then, see how long we have left.

We were garbage yesterday, Baxter's magic and a great performance from Maguire dragged us to a point. Anybody who thinks this squad can put together a 2+ points per game run to the end of the season is deluded beyond belief. Getting the 1.3+ points per game needed to stay in the division will be difficult enough.

Cloughy has already said that keeping out of the bottom 4 is is the main goal, so we will be going into most games with a don't lose approach and there will be no gung-ho lets get at em stuff. I can see lots of draws coming up with a spattering of wins and the odd defeat which would see us safe but well adrift of the play-offs.

I think yesterday confirmed that we're very unlikely to pull properly away from a relegation scrap and will be in one all season. Unfortunately we all know how United perform at the business end of a season...

Can't believe people are still even thinking about the play offs when we are only a couple of points off the bottom of the table.

Play-offs are way out of the reach of this squad, struggling to beat our relegation rivals.

Stay up and rebuild in the summer, NC will then have to deliver in 2014/15 a squad worthy of promotion out of this dire League.

I think a top 10 finish would be a great result for Clough as things stand, but I can't see us finishing that high if we can't win games like yesterday, where we dominated good parts of the game.
Personally I think we will be around the 15th spot just managing to get away from the bottom, since we are consistently picking up points we will move up the table, but there are decent teams down with us like Bristol City and Notts County which still makes me a bit weary of our position.

Your right, getting 1.3 points per game is bloody difficult.

I can only think of one instance where this has happened with Palace's amazing run to the Championship playoffs in 2004 under Dowie. At a similar point they had 22 points from 22 games.

And before anyone says Bournemouth, they were 7th on Boxing Day last year.

You will almost certainly need around 75 points to qualify for the playoffs in this division, which would be 2.2 points per game for the remaining fixtures.

So let's say a run of 16 wins, 5 draws and 3 defeats should see us through.

I admire your optimism but unfortunately I watched them yesterday .............................

In an earlier post above, I said that I thought that we could still reach the play offs.
May be wishful thinking ,but I did insert a caveat, that it would depend on ins and outs during the JTW. I would agree that the present squad, if kept are relegation fodder.
I think there was a season when Pompey were promoted after a winning run that took them from the relegation zone. unable to google it right now.
