Or, a mate says he's hacked in the Euromillions machine and has the numbers for tonight's draw, but you're so skint that you're feeding your 500 relatives on the final pot noodle in the cupboard, £2 is nowhere to be seen. You can't go to the bank because you're committing a criminal act, you can't ask your mum because Friday is bingo and she's got a feeling she'll get a full house and a bottle of cherryade, your dad will lend you £2 but he wants that scarf back he lent you last winter, and you've lost it.

Wonga or not? At 3000%, I don't think so!
cool.. you going to lend me 500 quid then mate?? what with you guys being so prudent with your cash and all

Actually, in the Blades News that Reg Brealey brought out in the early 80's (all copies lovingly preserved by me in a not at all anal way) there was a regular advert for the Omega sauna and massage parlour (for which read "brothel").

It was Reg, of course, who first decided to call SUFC a "Family Club".

There was nowt wrong with the Omega, it had a great pool table................. ;)

it's a real case actually.. mine.. thank goodness for wonga.. you lot can moralise yourselves to death

I'd have done the same.

All the contract positions I've ever had end up costing you money for the first month or two. Even if expenses are paid there is generally some initial outlay, mostly you get these reimbursed a month or so down the line.

But I doubt that you're the target market for wonga etc

Yeah, God forbid anyone tried to raise standards rather than scrap to the bottom of the pile eh.

Fair enough, well done to you, but you're the exception rather than a typical customer. The Citizens Advice Bureau has other thoughts that they published yesterday from a survey of thousands of customers of 113 payday lenders :

"Citizens Advice found that 12 in 14 promises to treat customers fairly were broken. It also found 3 out of 4 people struggled to repay the loan (1,539 cases) with 84% saying lenders did not offer to freeze interest rates or charges, despite vowing to do so.

  • 87% didn’t ask the borrower to provide documents to prove they can afford to repay the loan.
  • 58% did not warn that a payday loan should not be used for long-term borrowing or to deal with money troubles.
  • 84% of people who had repayment problems were not offered the chance to freeze interest and charges when they were struggling to pay it back.
  • 7 in 10 (72%) actually put pressure on people struggling to repay to extend their loan.
  • 83% did not highlight the risks of extending the loan to those already in difficulties with their payday loan.
  • 95% did not check that borrowers with repayment problems could afford to pay back the loan if it was extended"
So, basically, there are plenty of people who are using them and plenty of people getting trapped by them, because a) they are stupid, or b) they are desperate. Most people on the Manor who use them haven't got a 6-figure salary riding on getting a payday loan or not, they've probably got the bills to pay instead and yes they may pay the bill this month, but in many cases, risk being able to pay next months bills. But there's a solution as shown by the CAB, the payday lenders will offer you another loan.

Payday lenders don't prey on the well to do or those with well-paid, they prey on the poorest and the unemployed. The whole point is now irrelevant as United won't be having a Payday lender as a shirt sponsor, but it doesn't change the fact of what the Payday lenders are, that is, immoral. And yes, I'm aware that people dont have to use them, but desperation isn't usually a choice.

no matter how much debt you get in , diving into a loan with an apr of 2000 or so surely even the thickest person on earth can see its not a good choice, I know I owe 60 quid to the gas supplier Ill borrow it and owe 600 in 3 months time , brilliant

log book loans , on every log book it says this is not proof of ownership, just who is the registered keeper , so in theory they are loaning against , looking after a car, how strange

wonga already sponsor blackpool , newcatle utd and hearts, sponsorship should be seen as mugs willing to throw money away

This picture made me think of this thread somewhat:

I take it people do not sit easy with a Payday lender on the front of the shirt, but a shirt made in a sweat shop by someone on a few dollars a week is fine regardless of the sponsor?

Place the facts in front of the masses and we'll see.

It's a good point, well raised. I do try my best to shop ethically/morally, for instance, I don't shop in Primark due to known working conditions in places like Bangladesh but I do shop in most other chains where all I know is that they are generally Made in China. I also won't go to Starbucks or Boots due to tax avoidance but I will go to Costa and Superdrug. But, what you're alluding to is right. I don't know how my clothes were made, or the mobile phone I use under what conditions, but I've assumed that they are legal because they are for sale in the UK. If I knew more about the conditions, then I'd consider where my money goes.

However I do know, or at least have the opinion, that payday lenders are morally corrupt preying on the worst-off. I've never said that payday lenders are illegal just as a sweatshop isn't illegal, I just think they are immora and therefore I can take my money elsewhere. Of course there's nothing stopping any club having a payday lender as a sponsor. But, it just so happens that Blackpool, Bolton etc are poor places (as is Sheffield) and as shown by the Citizens Advice Bearau, poor and vulnerable people are targeted and are trapped by payday lenders. Is there a link? Who knows. I'd be disgusted if one more person out there got into a downward spiral while we were proudly sporting their logo for a little slice of the profits.

It's a good point you raise, but it's answered entirely by morals and not legality. If morals dictate that it's a dog-eat-dog world, then I'd care little for the people of Bangladesh just as little as the single mother on the Manor. That's fair enough and everyone is entitled to that opinion.

The Boltonians are moaning now Gartside has signed up "Quickquid" as the new shirt sponsor. They probably wouldn't have said anything if they had signed up RBS or HBOS for instance, despite the fact that the banks have royally stiffed every taxpayer in this country. But what do people expect, its a growth industry - go into Bolton and the only new shops opening are bookies, pawnbrokers or payday/logbook loan companies.

I find the whole payday lender sponsor ironic and I am not actually opposed to one being on our kit. Since we have had HFS loans (who were shite) on our kit. It just makes us look an even bigger joke than we already are that is all.

Haven't had time to read all the thread so sorry if this already known but Bolton Wanderers are now sponsored by QuickQuid which seems a very cynical marketing ploy...

We, meanwhile have not u-turned; we're just waiting for a good day to bury bad news........................

Shame on my club and those that make such decisions[/quote]
I note that lot from s6 were claiming some kind of moral high ground about exploitation when they turned down the sponsorship deal. I'm sure I read it on the rag website but I'm damned if I can find it now. Well I thought it was ironic considering the co-op write off etc.

From the reactions, am I to assume that said loan company marches people to a cash machine with a gun to their heads and makes them hand over cash? There was me thinking that they are providing an optional service where the contract details are open and easily understood. If you are stuuuuupid enough to use them, its your own fault.
I would find tobacco and alcohol sponsors more offensive.

They had chuppa chups on their shirts , which ruined kids teeth
depends on which moral your offending
Birmingham City being sponsored by soho street mosque and their Death to Infidels new tops could cause a stir

Can't help to admit that I got quite excited about this loan sharks story until I realised that "sharks" wasn't a 20 goal a season striker.

I agree with you to a large extent. The whole payday loans industry is geared to take advantage of members of our society, some of whom may be desperate, stupid, weak-willed etc. By agreeing to display advertising for this type of company on our shirts (for a fee), we are appearing to endorse payday loans as being a good idea i.e.
SUFC advocates xyz company and their products.
Whilst legal, I think that payday loan companies are loan sharks by another name
That's the issue I have.

In a nutshell.

Ah yes, but it's ok if someone else is doing it.....

Lets just have a deal with TALK TALK instead. After all they use our song in their ad. (ok so its John Denvers)
