Next Season Shirt Sponsor - Good Grief!

It's ridiculous if true. I know we need money from sponsors but...

As a working class city this really does prey on the vulnerable people. They may think "oh i'll try them that sponsor United". We shouldn't associate ourselves with them. Newcastle & Blackpool now have Wonga... again, working class cities preying on the weak and vulnerable.

People will sign up just because they're associated with the Blades so it seems like a good company.

It's a total disgrace.

I wish Id created Wonga or any other payday loan firm, easy money!

Honestly though I couldn't care less who's on the shirt as until Id read through this thread I could only remember Laver and Wards anyway.

Their adverts working well though as look, we're all talking about them right here.

If this is just from the advert on the OS though SUFC wont have any control over that anyway and probably wont be getting much cash from it either as it all goes to PTV.

Im much more concerned about that unscrupulous robbing bastard of a company called NPower thats splashed all over the site

can't see what all the fuss about money lenders is really
the outcry usually comes from people who don't need the cash.. if you use them sensibly they are cheaper than going over your limit.. the banks won't lend you the cash even if you have an excellent rating.. they're too busy making easy money out of euro bonds

Whilst I'm not keen on the company involved I don't care that much.

I won't buy the shirt, but then again I wouldn't buy any shirt with any sponsors name on it. Let them pay me direct if they want me to act as a billboard for them.

Bottom line. Does this sponsorship keep the cost of tickets down or provide our new manager with more ammo for the team? If so, fine.

I tend to take that view as well. However, I do have two United shirts with sponsors' names on that I wear down the gym. I reconcile this with my socialist conscience as

a. One has "Wards" on, so is advertising a company that doesn't exist;
b. The other advertises the Malta Tourist Board, which I assume is publicly owned

:)

It's not about how it looks or if you'll buy the shirt.

This potentially will put some deprived families through hell as they are already weak and vulnerable and may see this as a way out. It's most definately not a way out.

I wonder how many SUFC fans have been to Malta since we were sponsored by them?? I priced it up and it was a place i had never thought of going (didn't go in the end). The problem is, some people will see the website plastered on the shirts and give it a go. If they do, they're on the road to ruin and I feel very sorry for them.

You priced it up and decided it wasnt worth it, surly thats what everyone can do with the Payday loan, it might raise awareness of the brand but if that brand / product is not acceptable to you, you dont use/buy it.

Don't get me wrong Matt, I'd ban the fuckers from existing if I were in Government.
But just as I think fag and booze advertising ISN'T the root cause of kids smoking and drinking, I don't think SUFC plastering their names on their chests would lead to a mass trooping of the poor to their door.

The only shirt advertising I've ever taken notice of is when Asda sponsored the Pork for the '91 League Cup final. Haven't set foot in one of their stores since.

Ask Jim Chimmerney ....

(the old jokes are the best)

Yes to you and me.. To others that are desparate maybe not.

I had to stop eating Chupa Chups for a while for the same reason, was much harder than the Mr Tom boycott I can tell you.

But on the same note, if we were sponsored by ladbrookes or william hill then the same people could lump all their money on a bet instead as they are desperate.

If people are that desperate they will already be fully aware of Payday loans and a small glimpse of the logo on a Blades shirt isnt going to make any difference to them.

^Exactly this^

"What's that on that shirt, a payday loan company?- Wow I didn't know they existed, pass me the phone I'll get some more Bench gear for the nipper..........."

Wibble.

Well the Payday loan companies must think advertising will get them more customers. Otherwise why would they pay for it?

It's worth reading this ; http://www.cfa-uk.co.uk/information...s-and-research/the-payday-lending-market.html reading specifically at the bottom.

My head and heart still say that pay day lenders are immoral, but perhaps on reflection they're not.

The website you have quoted from is from the CFA which is:

"the principal trade association representing the interests of major short-term lending businesses operating in the UK."

In other words it's the spokesperson for payday loan companies. I think it might not be totally unbiased.

ha! Excellent. I thought I'd stumbled upon some impartial research.

I would say it raises awareness of their brand but I dont think it makes people decide to use them. If a person has decided to use a payday loan then the shirt sponsorship may lead them to that supplier or atleast to consider that supplier but I dont believe it will make people make the decision to get a payday loan who hadnt already considered it.

As others have said though if I offer to lend someone £10 and they agree to pay me £200 to borrow it they are fully aware of whats happening and if they're thick enough to accept then hard cheese on them and their terrible decision making will lead them to bankruptcy one way or another anyway

we pretty much did run around with "COCK" on our shirts, when le coq sportif made em!

if they lend you £700 and you have to pay £770 back in a month is that really such a big rip off?? its only when people dont pay it back it becomes a massive rip off, as they pay that £70 every month and still owe the same money.

halifax used to charge me £75 for going £5 overdrawn for one day. £25 for being overdrawn, £25 for paying the debit that took me overdrawn and £25 to send me a letter about being overdrawn! i soon ditched that account. but nobody would moan about sponsorships by banks would they??

Perhaps they aren't the brightest, ie, thick. Not everyone is smart. Isn't that one of the major negatives with payday lenders? That they offer their services to people who don't know any better, and them keep them trapped in a cycle of debt and more debt?

Yes that is one of the major negatives of Payday lenders however I dont think its our responsibility to 'protect' the less intelligent from unscrupulous lenders. Whos to stop them swapping their house for some magic beans outside of the football ground?

Also the joke could end up being on the lenders as they are lending to desperate people who dont make the best decisions who could easily just go bankrupt and not pay them back

I don't care if it's Wonga or quick quid. Whatever keeps us floating. These companies take money from stupid people who take loans off them. Why shouldn't anyone take sponsorship money from them?

Exactly - well said and I completely agree (as a business man myself)!

I had to stop eating Chupa Chups for a while for the same reason, was much harder than the Mr Tom boycott I can tell you.

I buy my vehicles from Gilders so that was a real tester ,theyve been sold now though. Sad as it is I actually wouldnt go to Asda or eat Chuppa chups or even go to Rumbelows. Just hope the pigs dont get sponsored by X Hamster.

They're generally around 30% interest so you'd be paying back £900 plus for your £700.

Wouldn't be overly happy myself, particularly as I've had a go at my 'Pool mates who slagged off their club for going with Wonga but then all bought the shirts  When you look at it, loan companies and gambling sites have a big slice of the sponsorship market these days.

Just to throw this out there...

For those who think it doesn't matter whose name United have on their shirts as long as they pay the money; would they be equally happy to have the names of Chariots Gay Sauna or La Chambre Swingers' Club emblazoned across the famous red and white stripes?
only if you get free membership with a season ticket

when ive used the money shop (admittedly nearly 10 years ago the last time) it wasnt anything like that. 15% max, maybe less. are you sure theyre 30%?

Well when I went to Malta a few years ago, we walked into the Tourist Board and they hadn't even heard of Sheffield United! It was odd. It was a civic office in Valetta and as about as untouristy as you could find.
