One other note from Nigel Clough today -- he will make a decision on his captain over the summer. Won't necessarily be Michael Doyle. #SUFC

Butler to be new captain?

What do we reckon?

Porter.
It's whats holding up his signing.

No doubt the rumours that we are looking for two other forwards will have him thinking he could be third choice hence his waiting.

Do you think that Porter signing a new contract is vital to this club?

Would be a good incentive to make him stay....3 year deal and captain. Would Doyle not being captain mean him not having a major role next season? Seems Basham is similar but younger version of Doyle.

That's definitely how i understood Clough's interview. I suspect Nigel is hoping Basham can replace Doyle, hopefully he can. I think the captaincy will go to Butler, but Harry if he stays.

I think Doyle might remain club captain but he's not guaranteed a place in the first choice team.
Hence Clough saying he won't make a decision on that yet.
I think Basham is likely to replace Doyle in the team and Butler will replace him as team captain.

Clough has said "you know you're going to get 7 out of 10 every week from Doyle" but he'll be looking for an occasional 8 or 9 from Basham next season. That is how we will improve enough to get automatic promotion.

As much as I want Harry to stay, I don't think we should be bribing him with the captaincy.
He's not experienced and vocal enough to be captain at the moment and it shouldn't be used as a bargaining chip.

Nah.Disagree with the Harry part.Perfect timing to hand him the captaincy,he`s played the most number of games out of any of our squad in the last 3 seasons and knows the division and reads it very well.
A huge and perfect carrot for the lad.
I totally disagree with handing captaincies to players who hav`nt even pulled the shirt on yet.

Just a quick opinion poll, does it actually matter who wears the captaincy band as long as there's leaders on the pitch?

Honestly i don't think it does, as long as you have leaders within the team... Collins has organised the defence the last few years and Doyle the midfield. Howard is a vocal GK but i personally think Long is the better keeper... But as i said, Howard is more vocal and communicates better.

I think it does matter. I've seen reliable players put in poor performances when made temporary captain, as if the added responsibility was a burden. I also said for a few years (usually around the times John Terry did something stupid) that Gerrard was prone to going missing in tough games for England, yet was always there to drag Liverpool through matches that weren't going their way, and giving him the England captaincy might coax more Liverpool-style performances from him (I think he's been very consistent while captaining England).

It's not just about how it affects the man wearing the armband, but also how it affects his team mates. The captain needs to be respected and trusted by all his team mates. Giving it to the wrong player can disrupt a dressing room. Also taking it from someone whose position in the squad is otherwise unchanged may upset him (but I think Doyle is a strong enough character not to be affected if it goes to someone else).

As with transfers, tactics and team selections, in Clough we trust. Maybe he's just letting Doyle realise he needs to continue to work hard and perform as he has since the red card against Fulham to retain his place in the first XI as there are others who could lead the team.

think he will go with Davies, but hopefully Brayford

Unlikely since he said Davies is coming in understanding that he is likely not to start the majority of games.

In response to people suggesting Harry, I only think he'd be captain if he signs the new contract offer. If we keep hold of him but he doesn't sign the new contract, I can't see Clough making him captain.

With Davies,no-one will know his `actual position at utd as he`s been played in various places.
A very good utility player who can draft in at most positions barring striker role.
I think he would be fantastic cover for L.B/R.B,even anywhere across the midfield.
A blades team would benefit from Mr .Davies.
A cracking set-piece player though.
