New Season Optimism

True, we are stronger than the side Weir could field, but we're weaker than the side that finished, so it sort of balances things out (well, not quite, we look like play-off material to me right now). If our aim is to achieve automatic promotion there's still a lot of work to be done, but we're still in June so there's no point panicking yet.

Do you think any team in the league is in a better position than us, without 'a lot of work to be done', to achieve that objective?

I don't and neither do the bookmakers.

I think next season will end in the most epic fail ever

we should then release our 'most epic fail ever' best of dvd, 300+ mins of playoff final defeats, relegations on the last day of the seasons, top goalscorer selling, jailed players and simmo penalty kick rugby conversions. I probably would buy it

I don't think that, no. Hence why you need to look at my entire post and not take any points in isolation, see - "...but we're still in June so there's no point panicking yet." However, it concerns me (as pointed out earlier in this thread) that Nigel Clough (who seems to be fairly open and honest with fans) is indicating that his plans are to make just "one or two more signings" before next season. I don't think that one striker, one right back will be enough. I think we need to double up on both those positions.

I don't understand why taylor isn't being given more of a chance to get in the team, he's as good as mcnulty at the moment isn't he?

So do I, but that doesn't mean we won't succeed unless we do. I think we all agree that NC is no fool. He sees what we see and, no doubt, a great deal more.

I'm sure we'll have two more incoming strikers. I very much hope COG is one of them. I'm guessing the second will not be available until his "parent club" are willing to release him in, say, October.

Goodwillie been released by Blackburn..worth another chance in English league ?
Well thought of in Scottish football while playing for Dundee ?

His French cousin is better.

Coad had a 'few good games'. That's an impressive understatement! We are currently weaker than we were last season, that's no to say we won't be come august, but our best 11 currently is not as good as the FA Cup semi team, no chance.
Already covered this in another thread but that comment doesn't hold up to any scrutany.
That first 11 didn't have a forward for starters.
It's also impossible to argue with any credibility that we aren't stronger in depth either and given the 60 games season depth is actually more important if promotion is the aim.
With the tougher, higher profile targets now being looked at I just don't understand the pessimism.

Same, bought a season ticket for first time in 3 years. Still sceptical about the state of our current squad's ability to challenge for top 2, but if we can bring in 2/3 players of real quality I will be looking forward to it. My god, how can we let any of the other 23 clubs finish above us? We are a medium sized fish in a puddle really (I think that's the phrase).

I agree with you mate. As we stand at the moment we're a lot of goals short of challenging for the top two and you would probably say we're likely to be somewhere 4th to 7th.

With Basham replacing Doyle and Butler replacing Collins the team looks to have more resilience about it and looks as if we have the ability to shut up shop when we need to.

Having said that, NC gives me the confidence that he hasn't stopped remodelling the squad yet and if we could get Freeman who can cover LB & RB well plus perhaps Brayford on loan and sign 2 decent strikers who are capable of 20+ goals per season; then we start to look a different prospect.

Unfortunately, if we lose Harry, we will need another young, commanding, pacey CB to replace him which may be tricky, although hopefully NC has more sense than the average SUFC Manager and won't leave it until the end of August to be sorting this out !!

I'm still trusting in Nigel, just hope the Board don't let us down as usual .......

The striker hunt has been very quiet.. I'm staying optimistic for once and assuming this is because our target is currently occupied at the world cup!

Don't think much will happen now before we get into July when a lot of the contracts are up.
NC will want to get people in for Pre Season training so the time to be concerned is if and when there are still no strikers at the club when pre season kicks in for real.
