Interested to see where people’s heads are at on terms of the principle criteria of a new managerial appointment, especially now the dust should wholly settle following CW’s classy statement.

A few bits going on for me: (a) we’ve got a short period of time with parachute payments, (b) a decent crop of youngsters is apparently coming through, (c) the board want more VFM in the transfer market, (d) the board want to do things differently.

ANOthers on the thread. 👇

I voted for "elevating the academy players as personally I think we need to stop the rot and a bit of a dead wood clear out mixed with keeping a few adding some experience and bedding in the youngsters could lead to the other goal of promotion.

Classy statement 🤣 🤣

Nowt like putting the boot in just before a new manager is announced. Whoever he is God help him the pro Wilder faction will never accept him unless he wins the Championship with 100+ pts

Fostering youth players for sure. I think our academy is entering a new golden age potentially.

Second priority should be to lower expectations, maybe try and keep the twats with pitchforks from his door.

Given what the money can do for the club in the short, mid and long term the number one priority has to be getting back to the prem.

That money gives us the ability to bring everything up to standard - training ground, academy, the kop... everything, and to establish a structure/philosophy for the long term - so it has to be number one priority while we've got a squad with at worst decent championship players, plus parachute payments.

I think a good follow up question is what should the new manager (or board) prioritise in order to get back to the prem. I wonder what everyone thinks that should be?
  • Keeping hold of all/most of the squad
  • rebuilding the team
  • bringing through youth players
  • changing recruitment structure/scouting network
  • improving training facilities
  • Something else

Well we have to go in as one of the favourites. That's pretty much unarguable. Robbo got little levity when we were mid table and he was following a more unpopular manager in Warnock. I don't get this negativity and playing down our chances. We have everything in situ for the new manager barring a few tweeks to the squad. We are in an extremely powerful position to bounce back. The new manager should and I believe will be judged accordingly.

I still think we'll smash it next season, looking forward to it. New manager has got 10 minutes though

With a front 3 of Brewster, McBurnie and McGoldrick - you'd have to say we're amongst the favourites.

As w@nk as they've been this year, with what I've seen in the Championship, those 3 should be rubbing their hands.

Just need to buy a completely new midfield and we're good to go...

Promotion for me as we realistically have 1 shot at it before we have to start slashing wage bill. Can't see us doing it though

Promotion for me , never have a better chance with some of the players we have now and a few additions funded by parachute payments and a few sales.
The thing with bringing youth through and not going up is you end up selling them if they are really good !

in an ideal world we would bring a few youths through and go up

Are the academy players really that good? I know there's a lot of hype but don't our youth teams play at a level below the top?
Either way, as has been said the next couple of years with parachute payments will be our best chance of returning to the top flight so we've got to make a real effort for promotion - might be our only realistic opportunity in the near future.

I've watched them a lot this season, its hard to tell if they're ready for the big time to be honest but they've been head and shoulders above the opposition. Been a nice respite from the first team, check em out on youtube, make up your own mind

The Sheff Utd Twitter account would have believe we're got a class akin to Man Utd's Class of 92...

Realistically the fact that only Hackford has seen meaningful game time suggests they're not quite good enough.

There's clamour round these parts to try them ahead of Lundstram etc, but I'd rather see us play a different formation or try other players (Osborn/Bogle/Basham in the Lundstram role??) Before we start handing out starts like confetti...

As a frame of reference our leading youth prospect (Regan Slater) is struggling at League One level...

That was my suspicion. I do watch them on youtube when I can and they do generally look better than the opposition. However as someone who has not watched a lot of academy football I do find it hard to gauge what level they're performing at in comparison to senior football.
Obviously like everyone else, I've been bombarded with clips and updates on social media that do help to whip up a certain level of excitement and expectation about the young lads. However I'm never sure if this is genuine and there is a belief within the club that we have a special generation coming through, or if it's just an attempt to create some good news and positivity during what has been a very bad news season. Add to this the increased amount of exposure the academy is getting across various different platforms and I wonder where the truth lies.

Dont forget RND. He should be a bit of inspiration to the others to go out on loan and prove yourself

I was going to reference the class of 92. Since Hansen made his famous comment about not winning anything with kids, I can’t think of a side in the top two divisions that have achieved much with a team of kids.

I’m all for the kids being developed and hope they make it, how we do that is up to the people running the academy and first team. It may involve giving them some game time now, or next season, or loaning them out to lower league clubs so they get regular games. But we know from history that if three of the current (younger) crop make it, we’ll have done well. Out of the older lads, it seems like only RND is likely to be in our squad as a potential regular next season.

It’s interesting how different clubs do it, such as Spurs, who tend to loan players out as opposed to City with Foden, who thought he’d be better having a couple of seasons playing small roles, with the minutes on the pitch increasing as he developed. So maybe we’ll loan a couple out and have a couple next season on the bench, getting 20 minutes here and there, more if they do well.

The danger is, if we don’t go up and they’re good, we’ll lose them. So, promotion has to be the priority, as it enables the club to do the other things we want them to.

Absolutely. I was going to say that Ampadu is from Chelsea's all singing/all dancing academy and we're seeing how well that's turned out for us...

Assuming our young kids will fair any better is just fantasyland. If we were playing half decent and the team was functioning, then maybe blooding one or two in certain games might be an option, but with the current form and dysfunction, I don't see how it would benefit anyone.

That's not to say dropping Lundstram isn't the right thing to do, but playing a young kid isn't going to achieve anything...

The quality and readiness of the youngsters is being greatly over hyped. While you need a coach who will at least look at them their route to the first team will be down to their ability and what they've delivered at a lower level. There is a clear route that RND has followed and he's proven himself at every level so far so should get his chance. The others I think still have 2-3 seasons in the leagues under us to learn the game and make their mistakes.
Top and bottom of it is that currently there aren't the number ready for us to be focusing on it as one of the two main criteria for picking the new guy. I certainly have it in third with an aim for the 2023/4 season but we need promotion before then. If we aren't promoted then it probably becomes the most critical given the financial dire straits we'd be facing.

I was very taken with the post about our "poshest" player. Some delightful and encouraging comments for times like these.

I think it would be a jolly good idea if we ensured our new manager is always required to wear, obviously it would be much easier if he did anyway, a monocle, a cravat and spats whilst twirling a cane - de rigueur when prowling the touchline.

Same.

To me the first season down is a bit 'shit or bust'.

If you don't go up then quite rightly you'll need to turn to youth because you'll be looking to offload higher earners as your parachute payments drop off.

Not sure how our wage bill compares against other clubs in the champs of the same size? Would we need to offload some due to wages? Agree about looking at our youth, give them a chance etc.

We get two seasons before it drops off this time, because we stayed up for more than one season. So we get three in total but the third is reduced.

ANother.
Building a team that plays with passion and belief, that we can get behind.
The rest will follow.

25.2% so far who don't see an urgent return to the Premier League as the number one priority

They deserve about the same level of football success as they obviously have in their personal lives
